Does anyone have any suggestions/strategies for pushes with cpen? I tend to use videos with shakehand pushes as models, but it's hard to position the cpen blade the same way. Any tips?

If you look at the Butterfly newsletters from the previous year at http://www.butterfly-world.com they have photo sequences of Toshio Tasaki pushing. They reorganized their site recently, so I don't have more direct links, sorry.

Also, look at the Chen Longcan and Jiang Jialiang's VCD's, which are posted here.

All three are short pips players, hope that's okay.

Key is to lead with the tip using a stabbing motion and don't go too much downwards

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look for the videos and newsletters. I can see leading with the tip on the forehand push. How about backhand pushes? Should one just mimick the position of the shakehand backhand push (but using the traditional side of the blade)?

Yes, key is not to push down too much as that will mean it will be tougher to get spinnier serves over the net. I don't think there is a big difference between shakehand and penhold pushing.

you can also do a flicking motion like you're throwing a frisbee

So I see, a stabbing movement or a frisbee throwing movement to push back the ball to the opponent.

I mostly do the frisbee kind of push, like a flick.

This is on BH attack. C Pen starts at 1:21, traditional BH then RPB.
You can look at the player at the other end for pushing with C Pen.

Some hints this instructor gives:
-right leg should not be too far forward; R leg should be slightly behind L leg.
-relax thumb; hold bat with index finger; push with middle finger.
-keep elbow / arm close to body. (more so than in SH BH push.)
-do not overuse wrist movement. (more wrist involvement for other CPen BH strokes OK but not the push.)

There are more hints but my Mandarin is limited.

Also, try watching Ma Lin pushes with his traditional BH during practice.
