Alex, do these 888 pips get enough spin to serve with them? I like the soft feel of Panther but they don't work for serving if I have medium pips on the forehand and OX LP on the BH. Do they also have a soft feel to the topsheet? Do they cause some disruption when blocking? hitting?

I assume you read my Globe 888 review?

I think most of the spin is generated when you hit the ball under higher impact, as the pimple feel a little still and not that grippy on the tips.

So for serves I don't think you'll get that much spin.

However you do get some spin reversal for the same reason, so there's the trade off.

Thanks, Alex. That's about what I expected. I guess I'd better stay with inverted on the forehand. I've played quite a bit with short pips on FH, but now that I'm much more mobile after losing 145 lbs. I need to develop more offense and I seem to be a lot steadier with inverted. I like the feel of pips but I just don't hit consistently with them. Becoming a looper at age 68 is a strange behavior but that's what I seem to be heading toward.

A soft and spinny short pips, like 802-40 can be an option... this is about as close as you can get to inverted...

BTW How is the 729 lightning?

729 Lightning is lightweight, spinny, controllable. It seems to wear out fairly fast but at $5 a sheet from Zeropong, who cares? I like the crack of LKT XT better when hitting, but I find the Lightning acceptable.

Never have any problems... I am playing with them for over 2 years now on my FH. I bought them, as I was reading your review, and ordered from your shop, long time ago. Maybe even three years. I tried different also: WP1013 (to slow for me on 1.5mm), Friendship 799 on 2.0mm (too fas, but I was more concerne, as I could not spin at all ... maybe low throw), Juis Masterspin was teriable for me, same with Friendship 563 ... I did like TSP Curl p-2, but that is now long gone. I did put some GLobe 888 on special super soft 30* sponge, instead of original 38*, and I love it. You have to swing throuh to make spin, but excellent top spin. Very good pips, I love it !!!

What do you think is a good thickness for good control? According to another user who seemed to like it, 1.8mm is just about right...

Based on my earlier experiences with 563 (another med-pip); 1.0mm is similar to short pip 1.2-1.5mm since the longer pips make the entire rubber feel 'softer' and 'thicker'. 1.8mm is similar to 2.0mm, I think. 2.2mm is quite hot to handle, but Baal says some Chinese female team players use that thickness. They are very good at playing, though.

Interestingly enough, softer sponges make the medium pip closer to a short pip, and harder ones make it closer to a long pip.

Tried an Avalox Magic A (soft - 35-36 deg I think) 2.2mm on a medium pip (563) -- it had behavior of both short pips (easy to hit through topspin) and long pips (quite some spin reversal, some reduced spin).

yes i guess that makes sense... the sponge either amplifies the LP effect or the SP effect, depending on thickness and hardness...

I think 1.8mm is perfect for pure attack. I have no idea about chop. I love it in 1.2mm, as still you can loop hard. Maybe 1.5mm or 1.6mm would be perfect, more, rather 1.8mm but who knows. Will experiment more with 1.2mm and let you know, what I think about 35 or 36 hardness on 1.8mm ...

Haggi, I think Globe 888 on 35 sponge would be best medium pip in the worl. I just think 38 is a little to much bouncy. So if you can make it on 35, that woul be a beast. Seems that 1.5mm up to 1.8mm is perfect. 1.5mm for more control. 1.8mm for more attack !
