As I've heard a few things about this rubber, I decided to get a sheet to try it. I don't think this rubber will suit me, but I got it at a good price in a shop in Taiwan, so I thought I'd try it just to find out. I got 1.0mm red sheet.

Topsheet looks of decent quality, not quite up to Japanese sheet, but as it's made in China I did not expect this.

There a Donic Akkadi L1 and L2, I chose the L2 since the pip tips are smooth (L1 has roug tips), and it's supposed to have higher spin reversal, which is what I wanted to test. Pips are fairly stiff, medium sized, smooth and close to full length. Feels quite smooth with low friction when you run your fingers over it lightly, but some more grip once you bend the pips.

Sponge is cream colour, and medium softness (although they call it soft on the back, probably 39/40deg. I noticed that as soon as I took it out of the packet, it curled up quite a bit, which could indicate a little tension, but I doubt it's intentional or they would have indicated it on the package... The sponge looks very similar to several other chinese sponges I've seen, so I doubt it's going to be slow, so unless the pips are particualrly slow, I think this rubber will be somewhere in the medium - high speed (for a long pip).

More to come when i've had a chance to try it...

I played someone at training yesterday who had just received the L2 in OX. I was surprised by how thin the backing was. It was so thin you could see the wood grains of the blade.
The topsheet was red with smooth tips. The player mentioned it was a lot more springy than TSP curl p1. Playing against him I found my loops were coming back as floats and the sheet was quite deceptive. Looks like a promising rubber.

Thanks bvautier!

I did not notice the thin backing, hard to see with the sponge still on... If it's more springy than p-1r, it's probably not going to be suitable for choppers, as the sponge does not feel dead either... I suspect it will be a decent pip, but probably nothing special or unique...

DONIC Akkadi L2: The effects of the frictionless long pimple ban

Meanwhile one season has passed since the ITTF have banned frictionless long pimples. But many players are still looking for the right solution.

Regarding this subject DONIC has two specialists in the team: Fabian Akerström, bronze medallist at the Youth World Championships 2006, and probably best player in the world with long pimples playing close to the table, Swedish National Team player and participant at the European Championsips 2009 in Stuttgart. He used to play frictionless pimple out rubbers before the ITTF had banned them. Further Joachim Voigt (national coach of the handicapped German National Team). We had asked both about their opinion of the DONIC Akkadi L2 rubber.

DONIC: Fabian, meanwhile you play with the Akkadi L2. Is this the right solution for you?
Fabian: DONIC Akkadi L2 is a very good alternative to the now banned frictionless pimples, to me it is the best one that is currently on the market.

DONIC: Why did you chose the Akkadi L2?
Fabian: Akkadi L2 offers very good control which is the most important feature for me. With a thin sponge I find the control even better. The spin and disturbance, playing close to the table, is also good, not like the frictionless pimples but probably as close as you can get. On the other hand when it comes to defending not so close to the table the Akkadi L2 is better than a frictionless rubber. It gives heavier spin and it is very easy to control both the length and the height of the ball.

DONIC: Was is difficult for you to change?
Fabian: Since the ITTF has banned the frictionless pimples, many have said that it won’t be possible to play the same kind of gamestyle again. It is true that it is more difficult but many players have shown that it is still a very successful gamestyle.

DONIC: Joachim, at the world top of the handicapped players there are a lot of players around who block directly at the table with long pimples. Is this playing style still successful there?
Joachim: Absolutely, due to the special circumstances in handicapped table tennis, this playing style is very popular and still successful.

DONIC: Do you also use this system when practising with the players?
Joachim: In Germany we don’t have any player in the handicapped national team using this playing style. Internationally, I work with Jane Karla Rodrigues from Brasil. She is using this system and is currently no 5 in the world.

DONIC: Which pimple does she currently use?
Joachim: We have tried nearly everything what’s on the market and then finally decided to chose the Akkadi L2. Like Fabian I think that this rubber is the best alternative that’s on the market at the moment.

DONIC: What has changed due to the ban?
Joachim: The maximum effect of the reversed spin has been reduced, thus one of the weapons became a bit more blunt. But other weapons, such as aggressive game, attack and rotation variations have been improved considerably. These are the decisive advantages.

DONIC: How do you use this possibility?
Joachim: With frictionless long pimples, many players have just kept their blade against the ball without using any special technique. That’s still possible, but there is less effect. On the other hand, an attacking game was much more difficult and the rotation was set by the ball of the opponent. Now much more variety is possible. You are able to play – we call it a “kick” – you can block with and without spin. Those are options that were not possible before.

DONIC: And why it’s the Akkadi L2 that’s the best suitable?
Joachim: Like Fabian has already said, control is the most important feature. It is responsible for variety. Here the Akkadi L2 is excellent. Additionally it supports the offensive shots. This is mainly due to the structure and arrangement of the pimples.

DONIC: Fabian and Joachim, thank you for the interview.

Haggis, did you ever have a chance to try the L2 out, and if so, what were your impressions?

I think I need to dig up my sheet and have another go... coz I honestly don't remember too much about it

Please feel free to 'bug' me until I do it, or I'll probably forget again... too many things to try, but too little time...

Fabian uses 0.6 L2...
OX is much better than 1.0 for flat hits and topspin drives (and faster)...1.0 sends lot of easy balls to a opponent...
I couldn't get 0.6 here, it looks like a good mix...

I play with Akkadi L2 in 0.6. I find it a very versatile rubber. I don't have enough experience of other long pimpled rubbers to give an in depth review. But i can say that it is very disturbing when using an attacking push to receive service. The ball really shoots off the pimples and moves in the air awkwardly. I find i have control on chop blocking, although i personally am adjusting to the speed of the sponge and it does seems quite fast and hard to keep on, but as i say that is me. Reversal wise it is very good if you get it right. I think i just need to work on coaching this part of my game. It is also much better than ox, naturally, at chopping away from the table. When i need to step back and chop i can force errors from the heavy chop it produces.

All in all it is a good rubber. After a few coaching sessions with the robot and my coach with the pimples to get the chop block i think my game will be vastly improved from using yasaka phantom 007, and that is a great pimple.

Hope that sheds some light on the rubber.

I put red OX on my Joo SH blade. Very good, all-arounder. Hitting was surprisingly good. My partner said it hits like an inverted. Chopping was excellent. I have to work on learning to push with it as I popped a lot of balls up.

It felt quite fast, but I attribute this to the Joo blade more than the pips.

I was blocking his loops fairly easily. He's 1900 level player. Punch blocking was effective and deadly as well.

I have to have some more time with it to give a better review, but it's quite promising for an all around LP.

Too late by now, Haggisv's memory of using it will not only have well and truly gone, but so will his memory of "where" he put the sheet by now too!

Those of us who've known him for a while, know his memory even better LOL.

Tried the L2 today on a new Clipper CR WRB blade and was quite pleased with it. I had tried this rubber before on a slower blade (Defence II) and was not pleased with the way it handled no-spin balls, but the faster blade seems to have fixed that to a certain extent.
What I was really impressed with was how well it chop blocks... very consistent and the spin it creates is very strong.
Hitting against any spin creates no sin wobbly balls that look very awckard to return. This rubber also really shines when hitting against backspin.

BV,

Can you tell us the differences between L1 and L2? I am particularly interested in knowing the differences in terms of chop-block as I have been experimenting this stroke last evening and I manage to produce some huge backspin with my L1. (on 2 chop blocks, the ball hit the net, fell on the opponent's side and came back on my part of the table after the bounce).
If it chop blocks better than L1, that would explain why Akerstromm is using it.

Thx for the insight!

MM
