And I have a supplementary question to the one asked above if that can ease be answered as well. On the topic of short pips. There are some short pips where the pip is very broad and on others it is narrower like my sheet of Butterfly Challenger has narrower pips than the TSP Spectol. Which one of these SP are better for chopping and service return and shat sponge thickness would be best if we want to loop with them as well.

That is a good question... Challenger would probably be the one? But the only reason i asked the question because i have tried maybe only 5 maybe 10 at most sheets of SP... and I am very inexperienced player and i have no idea how pips look at all... Srry if my question seem stupid but believe me I would not ask it if i knew :D
Thanks,
Mikey

Blade: TSP Trinity Carbon
FH: Tibhar MX-S 2.0mm
BH: Viper 0.5mm
Use 1.0-1.5mm sponge.

Short pips: TSP spinpips chop sponge, Galaxy Pluto, Dr. N. Pistol

Medium pips: TSP millitall II (plays like a slow, controllable short pip--much better chopping than any of the above)

Your question is not stupid Mikey. Ask away and don't sorry because if you don't ask you won't know. I have very little experience with pips as well. In fact the Challenger is the first pips that I have spent some serious quality time with and am now thinking of giving the slightly broader pip Spectol a try in 1.5mm sponge. The coach at my club says I will have more control with it but better chopping with the Challenger.

When i played with Dr.N Pistol 1.6mm I did not enjoy the pips because they were inconsistent and when i blocked the ball was dead, but when i chopped with them i had really nice control but no reversal.. so the ball came with really little spin or even a dead ball which i really didn't like so i wouldn't suggest buying such and expensive rubber it is not worth it.

2 high level defenders use SP : Ding Song (Friendship 802 1,5 mm) and Hou Ying Chao (TSP Spectol 1,8 mm), so they use spinny SP.

Interesting i always thought if you chopped with SP you need once with less grip so you can reverse the spin a lil.

hou ying chao also uses 802 now...probably political reasons as 729 is a chinese company....also one of the most exciting defenders to watch is jang song man from north korea...he uses 802 1mm sponge on a butterfly defence II blade. friendship 799 are also grat chopping short pips....SLIGHTLY longer and softer then 802 providing a little more ease to chop with

HolyMikey : I have to agree with you .Pistol was a big let down for me too it gives very little back spin when asked for an effort and reversal was nothing to write home about ,Pistol is a way over rated sp rubber do not waste money on it.

...short pips NEVER provide reversal....unless you have left a sheet of Dr. Evil in the sun for a week.....

It's more effective close to the table in a block and hit type style. The grippier short pips are more effective in a chopping style, same goes with long type pimples. I think though you just need to keep on practising to get better chopping and to get your consistency up.

IDK because when i try to chop with my 804-40 which i think are one of the spiniest SP there is i could get the ball on the table just fine but there was never enough spin for me, since my opponent just looped it back or even kind of hit it so after 2-3 balls there was too much on the ball for me to handle i would usually loose the point. So for me 804-40 is for sure not chopping pips although they are quite spiny.

i only tried some sp... butterfly speedy po, raystorm, dhs 651 and 652 with different sponges...in my personal experience

if you like to chop with spinny sp dhs 652 sponge 1.5 or less
if you like spinless sp dhs 651 sponge 1.5 or less

with both sp (651 and 652) i can chop several times with good backspin althought i'm offensive player and usually i don't chop in a match, only in emergency situations

Yes you can do that, but you only can do it when you're lifting backspin ball on the table by just tapping under the ball in a quick motion, it will come back as topspin.

In my opinion, chopping with sp its not about giving the heaviest backspin until your opponent cant lift the ball, but its a game of spin variation that force your opponent to make a mistake, like a high return that begging to be smashed away.

But in my experience, challenger with dawei butter 30deg sponge, or any soft sponge is the spinniest sp i ever tried. But separating challenger will be quite a challenge itself since the top sheet is very soft. I used it for a while, it almost as spiny as chopping with inverted, but you're not gonna get a lot of variation and consistency. the spinier it is, the more it react to incoming spin. Hopes this helps :)
