That is a 64Million Dollar Question man. I don't want to be pulled into your debate, so I will only give "YOU" my opinion. If a player is interested in playing like someone else, I don't believe they have paid close enough attention to themselves. The questions you have to ask are:

1. Can I play like that player
2. Do I want to play like that player
3. Does playing like that player work for my mindset?

All too often I get clients that come to me wanting to play like "Ma Long" or "Timo Boll", and I explain a concept to them that helps them get the correct perspective. There are 2 types of developments, and that is "Skill-based" and "Ability-Based". Either you can beat a person because your skill level is just too high, or you can dominate a person because they simple can't handle your "Physical Output".

You can watch any DVD, but you only have what god gave you. What I"m talking about in my videos is developing the "Correct" Technique, which may look like mines. But it will not think, perform, or be put under pressure like mine. So you shot are unique to you, and only "YOU". I have fast feet, and big power, but I will never play like Ma Lin in my wildest dreams. So it is unrealistic for anyone else to look at one of the best players in this Universe and say, "I want to play like him".

I would suggest for the player to look deeper inside themselves and find out what they want to accomplish with their own style development. My style was developed based on what I was giving from a skill and ability standpoint. The rest was filled in my me using my judgement.

So, I would say, "Use your Judgement"

Brian

Brian, I'm curious on how a person like you chooses their equipment. I mean you have an attitude that's like "If I have a table, a training partner and a bucket of balls, I can still train Table Tennis" and I think that kind of attitude is what table tennis players should imitate. Timo Boll used to practice in a local sports center when he was still in his home town waiting for a contract to become a professionals.

I choose my equipment based on 2 simple things. Players choose their equipment based on how well it plays "Attack Shots", and most players keep their equipment if it can navigate touch shots, blocks, and underspin play shot on a moderate level. So you have to weigh the pros and cons of that, and your equipment will find you.

Hope this helps

Brian

Can you tell me why you still use Butterfly equipment? I understand Tenergy is a must but why use Energy Force 3 shoes, Kreanga Aeros and Catapult if you can get much quality things from other brands for a much better price.

I have never publically said that I don't like Butterfly equipment. In fact, I have been quoted as saying that I buy my equipment every since I left.

I still have my equipment because it is the best set-up I have ever had. Just because I'm not sponsored by Butterfly does not mean I have to use equipment from another company. I see no value in being sponsored if a player is my level, and I would rather much buy my equipment just like a regular customer.

The main reason I have not gone to any other company is I'm not convinced that the other companies are actully making better equipment

I sorry if I offended you or something but I didn't say you don't have a right to buy equipment or something like that. My question included a "why" in it which means there's a reason why you buy Butterfly equipment and your reason is that Butterfly offers quality equipment. I'm just saying you can get much better equipment at a much lower cost. With economic crisis happening in the world, it's bound time people should start saving as much as before. I myself started with Butterfly quality items as I was really blinded by marketing claims and stuff like that. My savings suffered. Being a student who was only given like $40 per week, I think I suffered that most like not having lunch at school and just water until I joined OOAK forums and started wondering why do people here don't use Butterfly? I started and researched on budget Chinese brands and I only started using them at this age of 19 and I am in college now. Almost 6 years of suffering from Butterfly, I could have saved and at least serve myself a better lunch but it's better than never. Right?

You didn't offend me. I get this question alot. When most players leave a company, they start using equipment from another company. I left Butterfly, but it was to start my own company. And to be honest with you, I just haven't done the research to see if there is equipment out there that is higher than Butterfly with a cheaper price tag. If you know of any rubbers, give me the name, I will try them out at some point.

Hi Brian,

Playing matches I find that I physically tend to tense up, especially grip, wrist and general playing arm when I make contact with the ball. I don't know if this is from playing tennis where you hit a much heavier ball but

1. how do you keep the arm wrist and hand relaxed, especially in pressure situations - what are you focusing on mentally and

2. how can you practice playing "relaxed" ie what exercises do you recommend so that it becomes second nature especially in tense match situations?

Thanks

Hi Brian,

Can you do a video on using short pips on the backhand? I think a lot of players would be interested in that.

Interesting video in which Brian Pace talks about switching to short pips on his backhand.

Also congrats to Brian for kicking the crack habit.

Interesting vid. Glad he decided to stick with TT despite becoming 4th richest man in the world  and flying around in private jets with Jayzee and Pdiddy! :P

Brian has an interesting self analysis going there. He sometimes takes a while to get around the points, but its interesting nevertheless. Will he make the Olympics? Maybe his time in Romania will make the difference...if he doesn't fall back onto crack! :P
