Hey forum, Im 15 from thailand, height 167 cm weight 68 kg (not fat, but overweight :^)).
My style(s) -
Defensive - both modern and classic, trained defence since 2 years ago. set up - bty ardes + feint long 2 black + bty tackfire special soft red.
Offensive (shakehand) - both spin offensive and speed offensive, i differ my styles according to my opponents but speed is my main weapon. i've got a HUGE variety of serves for SH (including kenta's backhand tomahawk!! took me bout a month to vary the serve properly). i am confident playing both close to the table, mid and long distance, i decide my positioning according to the opponent (i smash spin offensive players close to the table but i'd counter attack speed offensive players away from the table, how far is up to his speed). two winged looper and hitter. 3rd ball attacks when possible. trained offensive shakehand for 3-4 years before stopping
Offensive (penhold) - forehand dominated obviously. RPB is as consistent as forehands but isnt as strong in speed and spin. i live on 3rd ball attacks when playing penhold, been studying ma lin's serves for ages. i use traditional backhand blocks as well. i like liu guoliang's style way more than ma lin's, more entertaining when watching and playing his style (but his serves are IMPOSSIBLE to copy with variety). i usually play penhold close to the table with good(?) footwork (my other sports are boxing, tennis and badminton where all the footwork training are much tougher than table tennis [especially boxing!!]). started 6 months ago but trained it more seriously than other styles.
All round (counter attacks and defence) - counter attacks are used in every single styles i play and given my solid defence i am comfortable playing the all rounded style. this style is played with jpen, cpen and sh. i tend to play this style when my opponent shows inconsistency and huge lack of footwork.

The level in which i play at is pre-national, i'm the top player for my age group in my province. i play table tennis mainly for the enjoyment but when im given an opportunity to train i'd make the best out of it cus i enjoy playing at a higher level.

jobs? - im still a student (OBVIOUSLY), im in year 10 (british curriculum) or grade 9 (american curriculum). doing 9 extended IGCSE's this by 2013 and is as hard as **** to get an a* (ARE YOU ****ING KIDDING ME?!!? ONLY 4% OF ALL STUDENTS WHO TAKE THE EXAM GETS A*?!!?).

other hobbies - played tennis seriously when i was 10 - 14, won players who were ranked top 10 in my age group at the time. played badminton since 7 but trained seriously 13-15, now at the highest level of pre national (at last!!!). started boxing since 13 but discontinued it up until recent months when i was bothered enough to make a return to the gym. i run 8 kms a day with a tracksuit on the way boxers run and swim 1.5 km a day, looking forward to joining a triathlon soon.

what lead me to this forum? - i've done a lot of researches bout table tennis in english (since researching in thai sucks) and found this website.

Dear Reader,

I feel the need to reintroduce myself here after several years of absence.
Lots has happened and I can hardly believe how thrilled I am to get back into table tennis again.

Anyway, I've moved across the globe (from the Netherlands to Taiwan) where I'm a (still poor) student, right now studying Communication after having finished my BSc in International Business. I played table tennis with some friends over the last months, and now finally managed to fixed my roster so I can actually join the University table tennis club. Of course the first thing one does in my situation is getting back on this lovely forum, only to find out I don't know much about what's going on in TableTennisLand hehe.

So right now I'm off lurking, asking bothersome questions, and hopefully contributing again some months in the future.
The sad news: all my equipment but my years old primary bat are still in the Netherlands :p.

Somehow I feel happy just being on this forum again.

Yours,
Servio

Hi,

I'm 26 and have been playing table tennis off and on for a few years. The majority of my experience was one year in college where we had our own table.

I'm a recreational level player, and just recently got a table topper to use on top of my pool table.

I came here in search of advice on what type of equipment (namely paddles) to buy.

Back in college my roommate and I bought $50-60 paddles which were a thick rubber variant. We thought they were awesome and mopped up the competition at college parties. Once I got here I found out that apparently there are certain blades and people put their own rubbers on the paddles, etc.. I had no idea it was this complex. :o

I'm now looking to get back into it and wanted to get a quality paddle for myself, as well as 1-3 more for people who I play with, as it'd be unfair to have them use $10 paddles if I have a nice one.

To give you an idea of my style of play, I used to play more aggressively/offensively; however, I'm now more balanced between offense and defense (maybe because I'm out of practice :?:)

Serve: forehand, mainly a hard "flat" serve, and secondarily a slice forhand.

Forehand: Mainly a "topspin" shot. Similar to my forehand in regular tennis.

Backhand: I often rely on a slice backhand, with the occassion topspin or flat shot.

I'm not looking to drop $100 on a solid paddle, but wondered if you might have ideas on some off the shelf, or custom style paddles that would be well suited for a player like myself. Many thanks!

Great advice from tOD.
Most of the premades you find there will be better than any premade I've seen available over the counter (at up to $100).

Colestt "Specials" currently lists the Dawei "premade buster", a nice build from Dawei components. Just make sure you select the best options. I don't know the DW2 model. The R5 is pretty rigid, so it requires a skilled player to get the most of it. The R2 is a nice blade, and the 2008xp rubbers are also quite forgiving, so I can see no reason to order anything less than the 2.0mm. Your choice is then narrowed down to straight or flared ("concave", somewhat like hourglass shape) handle. (I prefer straight, but most of the players I know prefer flared.)
For a developing player (such as yourself, if I read you right) it's an excellent choice. Also, if I were in the market for loaners for a home setup, I'd look no further.

The premades at Zeropong (Click "assembled bats") start at a lower price, and they are also quite OK. They are more or less built from "competition grade" components, so they will be better than what you can get at your local mall at anywhere near those prices.
The "composite" ones are generally stiffer (advice on the R5 above also applies to "composite" here), and at least the 729 rubbers are not as forgiving as the Dawei 2008xp (729 has more bounce and higher spin potential, but also more sensitive to incoming spin).
Avoid pips and penhold handles for loaners (unless you're sure that you really want one).

Thanks.

Would I be better served by this:
729 Carbon composite Pro bat FL with 729 rubber
http://zeropong.com/product.php?product ... 249&page=1

or this:

Dawei "Premade Buster" Combo (R2 flared) 2008xp, 2.0
http://www.colestt.com/usedblades.php

They're pretty much the same price, so no issue there. I plan to order 2 today.
