The 2nd option is a far better option.

Hello,
My name is Brian I am 24 years old and I'm in the USAF currently stationed in Japan. I started ping-ponging 2 years back at a friends house when it was just a "fun game" to play for an hour a week. Now that I have joined the USAF I found that Table Tennis is a very popular sport to play at any flight functions in our off time. This really sparked my interest in the sport of Table Tennis and not just the average players ping pong. For the last year I have been Lurking on this treasure trove of a forum finding some amazing information that has helped me pick my first serious bat, rubber, grip style , proper form and style of play. I am extremely interested in getting coached and joining a club when I go back to the united states , right now I have a few DVDs that my room mate and I watch and practice together and have increased in skill and understanding of the sport just over the last year. Thank you to all of you that have posted such great knowledge about a very little known overlooked sport . I am glad I am finally joining this community and hope to be able to someday add what I learn to help newcomers to the sport.

Current Equipment :
All-Around Classic WRB
Forehand : Mark V 1.8 Black
Back hand : Sriver 1.8 Red

Welcome to the forum Brian,
Do you get to play off post at all? Good chance there are some good clubs close to you. If you find one, check out the coaching there. It will probably be a lot cheaper than when you get back. :)

I've been looking, I asked a good Japanese friend of mine if he could keep an eye out for a club in the city I am stationed at that has a coach that speaks even a little English to help my newly developing game. To get a Japanese coach while I am here would be awesome!

We have another US Military member here stationed in Japan in the Navy - RMaxwellUSN. Maybe you should PM him for a hit Brian. (not sure how much he comes here now though).

I will send him a PM and hope he's stationed near me that would be great , about 5 out of 40 people I work with Play Table tennis regularly including my room mate. I do see myself improving playing them but it is definitely basement play.

Dont worry about the English. I have been in China for 14 months in the last 3 years. I had two coaches. One knew a "little" English, the other none. But I knew "correct" and "not correct" in Chinese. (Dway and Bo-dway) Alot can be said with sign language also. ;)
I dont know about Japan but in China, they would line up to play the "gwelow, (forigner).
The quickest way to learn is to play a variety of players and get some coaching. :)

Yep Brian, you just find yourself a club somehow some way (should be easy over there) and it will all work itself out. Jokers surely will make extra effort to get a game vs you. Japan should have at least as many clubs as Korea and you could parachute into a Korea city with a bicycle and get to a club within 10 minutes.

My bat is made completely from suggestions that many of you here have recommended to other beginners. Since I've gotten it there has been a great increase in consistency, and accuracy of my shots . Becoming and EJ is something i tend to do for any serious hobby or sport I play But I will do my best to hold it off till I get good coaching and really refine my style , I enjoy the Looping athletic style of play where I actually break a sweat playing makes me feel good that I try my hardest to earn victories .
