Back in the Netherlands I know many people talk (or curse) to themselves during play, and even during games. There was even a case in my club who pep-talked (and cursed) himself so much it would annoy opponents so much they started commenting on it.
However, here in Taiwan I haven't encountered the phenomenon yet.

I'm curious whether talking to oneself during practice/matches is considered normal in your place of residence, and to what extent.
What do you think about this habit and how it is displayed?

I suppose if I would have any matches here, I better learn to shut it.

It depends what you mean by 'talking to yourself'? If it's whole sentences or more, then maybe they're coming off their medication and starting to hear those voices in their head again.

Other than that, my own experience is that I might occasionally utter one or two words of affirmation, like, "Yes!" or "Come on." Very occasionally I might mutter, "Get it together".

With regard to the absence of vocalisation in countries like Taiwan, maybe it's a cultural thing. I would suspect that Europeans are more vocal as a generalisation.

I do this not to build up frustration. "I should have done that" are the most common words I utter. Mental toughness is making me nuts  :Chop:

Yes I do, sometimes, - "YES", "COME ON", THAT'S IT" etc. but not all the times or in all games.

Even I don't bother if my opponent do like this.

I see this as a world wide affliction that I sometimes exhibit. I certainly think that silence, while not as "exciting" is a much better attribute.

After a really stupid miss I call myself sometimes an idiot, and otherwise it's come on. After each game I can be quite harsh on myself and talk about my mistakes and tell myself what to do. Even if I talk to myself it is a way of relieving tension and getting a better idea of what to do.

I do it all the time. Sometimes I say "you", referring to myself, and every once in a while my opponent will think I'm talking to him. Because of all the kids at tournaments these days, I've worked hard to cut down/cut out the cursing, but I will still sometimes yell at myself, just to get the frustration out. I think a lot of people do it, but most probably aren't as demonstrative as I am.

I really don't see a problem if you or your opponent uses short expressions or phrases to let off some steam or congratulate yourself on a good play. I do get annoyed when players start swearing or congratulating themselves for strong shots against obviously much weaker opponents. And, please - oh, please - I hope our beloved game never has to suffer those grunts and yelps that seem such a part of modern tennis these days.

I mutter to myself frequently.

"Remember, keep the left foot on the ground. Keep it on he ground."

"MOVE! Like actually move."

"C'mon. Don't think. Feeeeeelll..." (thanks for that one)

"That way...twist and a little snap...more shoulder..."

Yep, we hoop and hollar, talk trash and laugh a lot when playing at a residence-"Bring it on" "Is that all you got" Also on invite calls we taught each other. Yes I am from the Southern U.S., not exactly a Rednek, rather a well groomed country fellow.

Well there is a World of difference here, talking during a actual point isn't aloud . I have opposition yell "OH NO: when I'm ready to smash, I find it off putting and once (only once) I caught the ball and said my point

and then having some prompting words between points is all good

I used to swear a lot but I learned to control it after some opponent commented on it.

Now it's the usual 'come on', 'i should have done ....', 'yes!' and 'puntje' (dutch for 'one more point'). Instead of cursing I just make annoyed faces
