Hello All,
I often get asked about what type of drills that I do to build-up my own long pips ball control skills. I have fifteen ball control drills that I do. I have made some short videos demonstrating the first five of these drills. I hope to get the rest of the drills on-line in a few days.

Here are the links to the first five drills.

Do you drill with him every Wednesday? That explains why I have so much trouble when I play him. He beat me 3-1 last Saturday but I plan to have my revenge this weekend.

Nice videos coach, but I would like to know what are your favorite moves when you play against:
1) Power-looper (for example Michael Landers) - who just loves to 1 shot you
2) Blocker - who loves to block and only sometimes attacks
3) Defender - who's main weapon of choice is many heavy underspin balls and very spiny loops

Well, I certainly am not going to be able to compete with a player at Michael Landers level. I am competitive in the USA in the Over 60 age group but that is a long way from competing with US National Team Members. However, I will try to give you a couple of ideas of how I would tactically play the styles you listed (at my level).

Against a power-looper, I normally turn up my own offense when I am serving. If I am forced to chop-block with my long pips I am going to take the ball as early off the bounce as possible to put the looper under some “time pressure” and hope to force some errors from him. When receiving serves, I am going to have to greatly vary my serve returns, including flipping often to use the short pips on the backhand. I have to keep the power looper confused about what is coming on the serve return or he will probably score a high percentage on his first loop attack.

Against most blockers, I will try two different tactics. First, I am going to attack with my long pips to see how he blocks against the “sinking” ball. Many blockers play well against loopers but cannot play against flat dead-balls. My second tactic is to simply force forehand to forehand exchanges. I have a strong forehand and I can often win these exchanges.

Against a heavy spin defender, I am first going to make sure that I am anticipating their first loop and make sure that I get it back on the table. I will use my own forehand loop to back the defender up from the table and then I will often flat hit with the long pips. Once back from the table, many choppers find it difficult to return the hard “dead” hit from the long pips.
Of course there are more tactics against these styles but these are a few of the basics.

Thanks Coach, this video series is terrific. I had a nice upset Monday night that I can attribute to your advice on service return.

Do you have any special tactics for playing against aggressive penholders?
