Some players, at any level in table tennis seem to have some unusual rituals, either before they start, before every point, or at other times in the game.

What's the weirdest ritual you have encountered or seen?

There's a guy i've played who rubs the ball VERY slowly up and down his thigh every time before he serves. almost sensually.

Freaks me out.

He used to be a cricketer. Bet he also wants to rub it on his sweaty forehead!

Well, one time some guys from a college came to our club, and one of them had a weirdo serve preparation. He would be moving normally, then suddenly explode into position to serve, and then serve slowly. Every time. really threw me off.

The guys who bounce the ball on the floor before the serve drive me crazy. Fortunately NO ONE...and I mean no one...at our club does this because due to the type of floor we have the ball will only bounce about 6 inches. When we have outsiders come in for tournaments it's fun to watch the first time they try the bounce-the-ball-on-floor ritual and the first bounce just dies and they have to reach down and pick it up.

Really? Hm....I guess the reason I don't find it annoying is there are people at my club who do it. Not a lot, though. Occasionally I wonder if it shortens the life of the ball though.

Oh, here's another. Blowing on the rubber, then wiping it off. I do this, not really a habitual thing, juts to give it a little cleaning mid-game.

during time outs and set breaks i put on some music on some monster 1980 headphones drape a towel over my head and sing....not loud enough to be distracting, but loud enough that everyone watching can hear...

not only does it make people laugh at me, but it also freaks out a super serious opponent because it looks like im a lunatic....

I have one opponent who is quite posh in his demeanor and will do a flourish and bow before every set. He demands your full attention for this otherwise he won't start a set.

I started just bouncing the ball on my paddle 3-5 times before I serve. Seems to heighten my focus, which is never a bad thing.

Hmmm..

There's this player who hides his racket when serving to create confusion. What's his advantage? His blades are both anti :D .
A player looks blankly at his racket whenever missing a powerful shot..
Blowing at hands before serving..

Me, I intend to dribble the ball on floor before serving ( as you have posted, this is annoying ). My purpose is to plan for my serve and attack.. and to annoy my opponent :D .

1) bounce ball to clean ball hand, then clean ball
2) blow on handle and racket hand if it is too hot
3) bounce the ball to rid it of static electricity attracted debris (outside only)
4) dribble the ball on he floor when waiting for the other person to prep
5) mumble to myself about what I'm doing wrong (usually footwork and body movement)
6) remove glasses and do a sleeve forehead wipe to sop up sweat
7) clean rubber by breathing on it then wipe in on shirt, the finish it by hand
8) eat a hippie bar between games (five grains, molasses, and other healthy vegan substances)

I have had guys tell me "not" to say the score out loud but to just remember
the score in my head??? he was always one point ahead regardless.. Same guy would start talking to you about non-table tennis stuff if you were winning. Mine was
to stop and re-tie my shoe when I was tied at 8-8, then serve a dead ball. I had one guy sing when he was playing. Last but not least I had a shoe sqeaker that
had to step on a wet rag near the table and sqeak his shoes during serves. This list goes on.

Peace GIG
:headbang: :Chop:
