Leatherback, just to learn from your experience:
I will live in China probably for a year and will have some friendly matches with Chinese teams for sure. However, the Chinese players I met yet speak English quite awkwardly, so I did not yet fully get what they told me. Could you explain the Chinese league system? Do they have something like USATT below the world class? I just want to know which level I am competing with.

there is amateur leagues very similar to what USATT where people practice amongst themselves as well as play tournaments for their own pleasure etc etc, but above that, there is the professional system. There is city programs that are associated with each of their provinces....this is where children first learn to play as they live at the facilities. Then they move up to the provincial teams and then if they are lucky, are well connected and their families are in government or have lots of money then they make it to the national teams. In all three of these teams there is several levels as well.
Thanks a lot for the info.
I played a Chinese last night who told me he plays in the 6th highest league level of China. What would that tell me (currently, I am in Bejing)?

Your shots are incredible. Good quality, variation in depth, speed, spin. Your loops had great form and seemed to carry a high quality of speed and spin and placement. I would love to see a video of you playing matches to see what kind of shot combinations you put together with such a diverse skillset.

Hey Alex, how did the tournament go for you? Any clear differences in play style between your Chinese training partners and your real Canadian opponents?

Wow your chops against loops look great! You seem to come right underneath a lot of the balls instead of brushing the back of the ball.

I got a silver medal in doubles with my student (a chopper as well) in the Open division, and i lost in the round of 16 to the eventual winner of the whole tournament.....

i could have beaten him easily but being used to a lot of Chinese players I immediately moved too far back....most peoples loops here are much shorter with more spin or deeper with no spin (more smash) If i was expecting the shorter more spinny ones the game would have been mine, but being too far back my forehands were out of control with no option for counter attack, now that i know what to expect, the next tournament will go better....

everyone uses tenergy therefore flatter trajectory long penetrating loops are more rare....that's the biggest difference. And i can expect people to miss more lol!

Alot of choppers keep one chop speed and adjust the angle of contact on the ball, myself i prefer to change the speed of the chop and try to keep that angle....i find i get much more spin!

there was not alot of close table work in this warmup as I wanted to warm up my chop more....

i believe he plays in the amateur league then....most players that are over approx 28 retire and become coaches...

there is an endless amount of amateur leagues and private clubs in china so he could be anywhere
