Irene Ivancan against Fan Ying is being streamed live right now. Great quality stream, too.

CHTCHETININE RETURNS

Pretty good group of players on next week's Challenger Series including the return of Evgueni Chtchetinine, Thomas Keinath and Torben Wosik.

MISSING SHORT FORM MATCHES

The people who create the "short form" versions of pro table tennis matches on YouTube do a great job on the mainstream stuff. Unfortunately some of the matches of interest to me and probably a lot of other OOAKers don't get posted. For example, Wu Yang's match against Liu Shiwen, Or Amelie Solja's three matches from the Olympic Trials. Or stuff from the Euro Leagues featuring pips players. I've been thinking about doing some of these myself, but so far I'm not liking the video editing software I've tried to delete the dead time between points. I need a fast, simple way to make the dozens of trims required. If there is no such program, I salute those who are editing these matches. The multi-trim feature I've used on various programs is a headache.

MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CATCH NETS

Greg Letts' review of the Butterfly catch net. He never mentioned the terrible side nets that don't hold the ball in. Also mine doesn't funnel the balls smoothly on one side. I wouldn't recommend this net.

That's because for me, the side nets hold the balls in just fine. Obviously I can't speak for your net, or anybody else's.

Once in a while I get a buildup of balls in a side net, which needs a quick nudge to push them down into the back net between drills. Takes me about 10 seconds between drills, and happens maybe every 4-5 sessions. Other than that, the side funnels work great.

I sincerely love this net, I've had over 10 years of sterling service from it. Sorry to hear that you haven't had the same experience. But if you are wondering why I didn't mention the flaws you encountered, that's why.

Greg

With my Butterfly catch net, a lot of balls that dribble back to the net simply roll out the side, which I find very annoying. My Newgy robot's net doesn't allow any balls to escape.

Also for some reason on my butterfly net, the balls always bunch up on one side only. The other side works perfectly, so maybe I just got a bad net. For $2600 they could have done better.

What we do at our clubs is to raise the collecting net on that side slightly higher, and hold it in place with a safety pin...

That's a great idea. Thanks!

Ah - I see what you mean now - you know, I've never really thought about that as a problem, although my net must do that too. Probably because it only happens on a couple of balls per drill. The Newgy catch net II is even worse for me, since it doesn't reach the net properly, and I had to use extra elastic bands to attach it to the net clamp. The net with the Newgy 2050 is good though. The IPONG uses a separate net post of its own which is the same height as the net.

VIDEO TEST

Here's a bad quality practice video I did on Wu Yang's Korean Open match that never got posted to YouTube. The point at 2:37 was the best.

That's certainly not a bad attempt, in contrary. You're doing it in Janus' style: almost every point is shown and when it comes to a modern defender playing, I like it that way.

The only problem is those black boxes left and right from the video. I think you can deal with those by adjusting your lenght and width of your video. A good free program to do this is Virtualdub.

Not Bob, I hope you are not in Korea. If you came here to Korea and did not engage us Korea based forumer, it would be bad business.

Maybe you got this vid from a source un-named?

This is test #2. Correcting the aspect ratio and adding the MNNB-TV logo. I thought this was an interesting match as it's a player using one of those two-sided jpens. No twiddling. She has short pips on the forehand and inverted on the backhand for an occasional jpen RPB. I've been experimenting with jpen lately, so I guess I'm just interested.

Thanks. I'm not sure know how Janus and the others do it. I did the edits in Corel Video Studio Pro 5. As the match plays I insert the cuts in real time using hot keys. I think would take forever any other way (it seems like it takes forever this way!).

Lol. I just edited it. If I would have shot this it would have been better quality and from a better angle. I'll definitely hook up with you if I get out that way.

Maybe you can use another MNNB-TV logo instead of just plain text. Maybe something you represent: a pip or something like that. What would be hilareous, but probably forbidden due to copyright, is that logo with a big red line through ITTF: the one I can see in you avatar. :D

This was posted today. Not a good advertisement for blocking with long pimples, although it is the semi-final so Shahnazari obviously beat some good players off camera before this match.

Robert's opponent in this video, Thilina Piyadasa is an 8-time Sri Lanka national champion...
