I bought a Nittaku Shake Defense blade several years ago and recently started using it again. I decided I'd better get a backup, so I bought another one a few months ago.

I didn't use it until this week, although I did notice it was about 10 grams heavier than my other one. Now after using it, I can see that other than being heavier, the new one has a different sound and feel. So tonight I gave it a closer look and to my horror found that one of the plies seems to be about double what it's supposed to be.

Since I bought it from Europe, it will probably be a pain to exchange, if they would even take it back. I'm definitely not happy with this shoddy craftsmanship.

Wow, Nittaku is one of the last ones I'd expect that from! :o :o :o Their quality is usually top notch from what I've seen!

i noticed they both have the JTTAA stamp on them, often indicating they are not bad quality.
sadly the new Nittaku Acoustic and the old one are slightly different as well.

What effect does a thicker ply normally have? Does it make a blade faster or slower?

It can be either... depends on the type of wood. The thicker ply would give that size more of the characteristcs of just that material, and you'll have to hit much harder before the inner plies will have more effect.

As you can see, your 'new' one has a glued label instead of a nailed one. This is a known hint for heavier, stiffer NSDs - sometimes this is prefered, but if you want an adequate substitute, you have to look for an NSD with nailed label and JTTAA stamp at the same location.

Thanks for that information. I was reading through that long thread on noppen-test. It looks like Nittaku must be using different blade makers when they make production runs of this blade because everyone is commenting on how the blades purchased at various times are inconsistent. I guess I'll have to try to trade off the brand new heavy one for an older one. :worried:

It's still poor quality control IMO. It's not that hard to get the plies to within a fraction of a mm, and this one looks like it's out by much more than that.

If you could pop the handle off, and the metal tag at the bottom, you could try and sand it down with one of those super rotating sanders.

You know.. what are the chances that one of the blades is a Chinese counterfeit??? I've seen "Tenergy" for $20, for instance...

I bet the blade is not made in Japan...

They could have simply changed the formula without letting anyone on the outside know about it. For example, the new, larger Tibhar COS3 just feels so much different to me than the old one, more elastic. I would expect the formula to be the same if the blade retains the same name, but it happens with rubbers as well, such as reducing the length of Grass D.Techs without breathing a word.

But in this case only one of the outer plies is different... that can't be by design as it would make a combination blade.
