Hopefully I'll be filming tonight. Unfortunately I've only got my main camcorder and one I've borrowed from my brother which is really a camera but which records video too. I'll be filming from the filming gantry which is the usual behind the tables, high up position so I'm not sure they'll pick up the ball and it's certainly not my preferred filming angle. I have to be there because with two cameras going and limited battery life I need to be able to monitor them and get quick access without constantly walking infront of people (they would have had to be about 50 feet apart) AND I can only be in one place at once and I'm not prepared to leave one unattended in amongst the seating.

If the footage comes out ok I'll edit the games down but I've had a lot on the past few weeks and need a break so it'll be a couple of weeks at least before I post them and footage from the practice sessions.

Haggisv - I know a bit more about you now ;) This is the speed I would normally play at, but you already know that!!!!

Yes he is tall but he also injured himself in the warm up tonight so William Henzell and Justin Han played all the matches. Generally I tried to keep out of the players way although I did speak a bit to William Henzell. The players were here to train and prepare and our job was to help them do that rather than socialise with them. I didn't actually speak to any of the women players and I'm not really that comfortable approaching them either. I prefer to lurk in the background - the darkside you could say :) I think all the players were really focusing on practicing and getting in the mindset for tonights match which was a pre olympic warm up for them. Tomorrow it's down to London for the teams and on to the Olympics.

Results from tonights matches.

Men's results in the order matches were played:

Liam Pitchford beat William Henzell 11:8, 11:9, 11:7
Paul Drinkhall beat Justin Han 11:8, 11:9, 14:12
Baggaley & Pitchford beat Henzell & Han 14:12, 9:11, 11:6, 11:7
Paul Drinkhall lost to William Henzell 11:13, 8:11, 11:9, 6:11
Andrew Baggaley beat Justin Han 11:5, 11:6, 7:11, 11:9

GB 4:1 Australia

Women's matches in the order mathes were played

Na Liu beat Jang Fang Lay 12:10, 11:8, 9:11, 5:11, 11:6
Joanna Parker beat Miao Miao 11:8, 11:9, 11:6
Sibley & Liu lost to Tan & Miao 11:8, 6:11, 9:11, 11:13
Kelly Sibley beat Jang Fang Lay 11:8, 7:11, 9:11, 11:7, 11:3
Joanna Parker beat Vivian Tan 11:9, 11:7, 9:11, 8:11, 11:6

GB 4:1 Australia

Some really good matches and a good crowd watched too.

I managed to record all the matches except for the doubles. It will be a little while before I edit them down - tired and need a rest. Just a couple more jobs to do first though. A good night was had by all and some useful match practice for the teams on the same tables they'll use at the olympics.

The first three photo's were taken on Saturday night and are inside the Harris Museum where the Civic Reception was being held for the Olympic teams that were still in Preston and were using it as a pre-olympic base. There were also three "Preston" people there who had been selected to carry the olympic torch through the City (others who did it were not people who lived in the Preston area). The torches weigh about 2kg. The next two are with the physio from UClan who looked after the team during the stay. The last ones were taken inside the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre - where the teams practiced.

One point from each match played. I'll be uploading videos of all the singles matches when I get time. There were just under 700 people in total watching the international.

Do I detect some reverse bias here? All the points are won by the Aussies! The Brits are much too self-effacing to do something as crass as showing themselves winning. ;)

Very observant Tassie! No, the ETTA asked for no photo's or video of the event - they had their own photographer there. However, I was asked by someone in the Australian setup to send them some photo's etc. Didn't really think there would be much point in sending them a video where their players lost every point, so this video was aimed at the "Australian" market! If the ETTA had asked, they'd have got one of the Brit's winning every point

I've uploaded videos of the training session I filmed. The first video is normal speed so you can get an idea of the different routines and things that were practiced. Each of the subsequent videos are all high speed 210 fps videos which give a chance to observe technique and movement.

Awesome videos Debater!

What stood out for me with the slo-mo videos is how fast the good players anticipate the placement of the opponent's serve, and how early they get ready to return it.

Yes I agree completely. Thinking of how I return, quite often my lead foot hasn't even planted itself on the ground when I'm reaching and making contact with the ball, especially on service return. It's almost like I subconsciously try and time my impact with the ball with planting my lead foot down. These players not only have their feet set, they are balanced and steady before they play the ball (when they are in control) and that means their bat angle is how they want it when they make contact with the ball. I'm really going to have to focus more on recovery and set up for the next shot instead of thinking solely about how I make contact with the ball.

Cheers haggisv - I'll be interested to learn if people find the high speed videos useful or a waste of time.
