I thought I should mention that Gionis is on the rise in the rankings! He's currently #41 (up from 50 last month):

I'm so excited to see another chopper climbing up the ranks! :D

I read Gionis isn't even a full-time pro, but a dentist. It must mean that he has patiently built up his career, allowing himself a lot of time to study and work. Impressive. And perhaps it indicates that intelligence has something to do with playing well, at least as a defender  . I hope he will get to the level of Chen and Joo.
By the way, it is interesting to compare his style with that of Hou Yingchao. Lot of similarities, although Hou is using (as far as I know) 802 in 1.5 and Gionis Feint Long II (with Tackiness D) on a Butterfly Korbel (!).

Hi Kees, have you start writing your table tennis novel yet? Remember, there are a lot of real customers here already.

I set my goal to be a top 150 in USA but lately kinda focus more on coaching. I just love it. Never realize seeing my students play well is so ......what's word?...... refreshing?

Rewarding?

Sometimes it's more rewarding seeing your students play so well than doing it yourself.

Keep up the good work! You will be rewarded some day.

Well, I just thought this amazing article by Kees needed to be brought up to light again  . This is the most important thread in this forum that I have read this far (well, Leatherback's blog comes very close) .

And also, I wonder if the analysis on Gionis game would be the same if it was carried out today? The last matches I have seen Gionis play he is more of a mid distance attacker with a defensive BH, he uses his FH from almost anywhere on the court, and his FH seem to become more powerful every year. But of course, he still needs his LP to set up for attacks and counters.

Def attack thank you for bringing this thread up again. Wow, what great analysis! And ideas for me to incorporate into my game. Thanx to all.

Also a great parallel between Gionis and Ruwen Filus of Germany who is much more offensive on his back hand because he twiddles. I also have not seen Gionis hit a junk shot like Hou Yingchao or Chen-his strokes are very clean, orthodox, and powerful. Great article!

This is a great article!

It's one thing to know and understand tactics as an abstract concept, but hands-on practical examples put forth as detailed as this really make everything so much clearer. Super kudos!

I see that Panagiotis Gionis sometimes plays with special shorts (cullote short).

Image

Does anyone know if this is compression shorts? What is the reason for the use of this shorts?

regards
