Yes that's indeed Paul Langley.

No no, you've got it all wrong... HE plays at a high standard! ;)

The way State League works is that there is a 4 member team, and players are ranked according to their previous year performance. Your previous year ranking gives you a certain number of points, and NO team may exceed a combined total number of points (set by the match director at the start of the year). This ensures no team is too strong. Since our club had 2 teams in State League, we could easily arrange the teams to ensure we didn't exceed the total. Luckily I ended up in Paul's team, as he's a class player, and certainly way above my level!
For the games, not every player plays every other player.... for example the No 4 player does not play the No 1 player, but only plays the other 3 players. As I'm the No 3 player in the team, I don't get to play the opposition's No 2 player, but play all the others.
PS The league was designed this way about 10 years ago, when it was found that we simply did not have enough true State League players to make the teams, so instead of just reducing the number (or size) of teams, this 4-member team option seemed more attractive as it would also allow more young players to get the opportunity to get to play the top players.

More to come, when I find the time :( :( :(

Ahah! :) Do you have any problems with playing because of your height? My bloomin' long legs can make it right awkward to come around on the backhand in cramped venues.

Haggisv plays with all the grace of a gazelle. Just takes him longer to pick up the ball.

Congratulations mate.......a fantastic win and well deserved.  8)

There were many great matches, hard fought and played at a high level.

I just wish Paul had his bat around the right way in the photo though......sheesh. We'll let him off this time as he won two tough five setters.

Strongpong, are you in Haggisv's team also?

I think Haggisv's loop is so side-spinny cos he needs to come around the ball instead of straight up, otherwise his knuckles would scrape on the ground as he started the swing :P

LOL I think you've got your animals mixed up though... an elephant (what it feels like) or giraffe (what it looks like) is probably closer.

Hi Reb,

I have been filling in on the odd occasion due to the distances I have to travel. I would love to play weekly. I've always filled in for the other Brighton State League team (which narrowly got knocked out of the finals - came down to a count back on points!)

Playing in a team next year with Haggisv would be great, definately up for that.

Watching the final has stirred up some fire in the belly.........might have to clock up some serious km's next year.
