Back in the days of playing to 21 I found that good players would standardly let the other person serve first even if that person guessed wrong. I heard the reasoning was that if it got to the crunch time (I can't remember if there was a particular score they mentioned) in the final set you would be serving. I used to choose to serve only because I got more points on serve and a bad start could affect my confidence.

Since changing to 11 people seem to have stopped giving away serve. Is it now well agreed that serving first is better?

I give up the serve fairly often .

that's because 9-9 in the 5th set is always the person that recieves first, i'd much rather have control of that point than my first couple :-)

I prefer that I serve first. I like to build up momentum early.

My serve is one of my best weapons and it helps me to get a feel for the match and control the pace, so I always take the serve first when I have the option. The odds of a match going to 9-9 in a 5th game are pretty slim. Plus, for me, in a 5th game I find that I tend to get off to slow starts, so having the serve first can be a big help to me in avoiding an early hole.

I always give away the serve in practice, because I know in tournament situations I won't always get the serve. In a tournament I'll take it when I can get it.

Yep, me too, for exactly the same reason.

At our club it is really uncommon for people to give up the serve. I did it in a match just recently, and my opponent questioned whether I was allowed to! I held my ground, it went to five sets and, at 9 all, I served and won the match. :D

Sometimes more important, if you give the serve away, you get to choose which end you start on. If there is a lighting problem, this can be important. :)

actually even more useful than 9-9 is serving at 10-8 down in the 5th.

i've saved match points with this and won a match fairly recently because of it, I'd like to think against all except the elite players, my recieve is good enough to not be a liability in the first few points anyway.

Yesterday I played an anti-player.

I was down 10-6 and my turn to serve. Able to get 10-8 and had two great return. I won the match after a couple of deuce.
I would prefer to serve if I am down 10-8 though.

no no no you can't . You only get 1 decision out of 3 choices, either
If you win the toss
1. You choose to serve
2. You choose them to serve
3. You choose thier side

you don't get two decisions
If You can choose thier side then they have 2 decisions left
1. They serve
2. they give you the serve

You can't say you serve and ill have that end

If there is a difference in the side I choose the side I like best as my first option (as a defender I want as much room to run around as possible). However usually both sides are similar in size, so I always choose to receive serve-I would much rather be serving at the end of a close game if we are closely matched. If either player is significantly better it does not matter.

I am surprised, but almost everyone I play is surprised by my "giving the serve away." Some at my home club are beginning to catch on. I would think EVERYONE would be doing what I do, but evidently I am missing something. Best option is when my opponent chooses to serve first AND I get to pick the best side.
