Anyone else watching this today. 6 hours of coverage on Sky today. What do you reckon?

Better than last year?

I've enjoyed it so far because I think I can appreciate the the skill. But still sure how we'll it's translating on TV to the general public.

Too many mistakes. To many players who don't look like elite sportsmen?

But then darts doesn't look like elite sportsmen and those guys are amazing and so popular now. Just not sure I'm convinced it will catch the mainstream. Darts is a game for the people. Will the people relate to ping pong?

I saw the last hour of it. I think the blades are too fast. Not that entertaining, from what I saw.

It's on Sky Sports, so you might find it on the net.

Those blades are not fast at all. I have a couple of them. They are very slow indeed. But the players hit so hard, plus the cracking sound they make, I think it gives the impression these are faster than they actually are.

I just fear it's something TT players will watch, but the general public will quickly turn back to the football channel.

Well, based on the little I saw, it looked pretty unimpressive. I'm sure anyone at the competition could beat me, but there were probably people sitting at home thinking they could beat the guys on screen.

The rallies seemed even shorter than sponge matches, even though the point of giving them the sandpaper paddles was for longer rallies that were more comprehensible for the viewer. The Lihadors are much more fun to watch with a much more attractive style, but it seems going for the kill as early as possible wins even in sandpaper.

I've seen the first two quarter finals, and thought it was pretty good. Good combination of attack and defence, and players clearly having to work hard. I find the presentation a little vulgar for my taste, but given the fact that the other events put on by the organiser are snooker and darts, I guess it's expected to be a bit more rowdy and laddish compared to your standard table tennis tournament.

lol, maybe not with sandpaper bats abdulmuhsee - don't underestimate how hard this is until you've tried one. I think that's why some of the points are a little short - so little margin for error.

I do agree there are not as many good/long rallies as you'd expect. Seems the modern style of all out attack has changed things for ever.

I've not been able to watch it this year-hopefully some games will appear on youtube.

I think the bats are pretty decent. My club used those bats for its annual hardbat tournament on Friday and we all found them pretty playable. Here's part of the final-bear in mind that the players have not practiced with the bats before the tournament.

Something interesting caught my eye in the WCCP website. The champion Maxim is wearing Tenergy shirt! :D  .

Well, I saw the final (posted here http://ooakforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=24778 by Oleg), and it wasn't too terrible, but not spectacular either. I think it looked worse than your average offense-on-offense sponge match, with some good rallies and quite a few poor ones. Lupulesku really had the look of, "Well, I know I can't win" on his face the entire time.

The only thing out of the ordinary was Lupulesku trying to pull off that behind-the-back exhibition shot too many times. That, and the announcer still said, "I think this is the best display of ping pong we have ever seen," even though it clearly wasn't. :?: I just wish the final would have been more spectacular for being broadcasted on television by a major sports network; not for me, but for the recreational and non-players watching. That girl giving him the medal at the end sure was pretty though.

Proud to say I have beaten a couple of those in the tournament. Tho they would destroy me with hardbat!

He final was a let down sadly.
