I was trying to find a previous post about rising table tennis stars where I touted Xu Xin. But both Ma Lin and Wang hao are old by chinese national standards and besides Xin there are no new penholds. I've noticed that the number of active posts on the penhold side of this forum is also dwindlng. I wonder if there is any connection and if there is any hope for penhold players. It seems that the chinese team is letting it go.

I think it would be a shame to see the style dwindle... it's the great variety of styles that makes our sport so special!

What a great idea for a thread. I was thinking about this the other day in that all the penhold players I look up to are either retired or beyond their prime. Outside of Xu Xin, who is in his prime right now, there's not much out there.

Well I came across this match on youtube the other day and it features Hung Tzu-Hsiang who is competeting in this under 21 event. He's currently ranked 107 in the world according to ITTF.

We should keep this thread going if anybody knows of some younger, up and coming penholders to watch for.

While there will always be video from some of our favorites, there's always something to be learned and perhaps some of these newer guys could show us a thing or two.

Come across this match in Hong Kong with some intense RPB battle. The one in yellow is Wong Chun Ting, the top new generation Cpen player of HK. Second best Cpen after Leung Chu Yan.

There are quite a bit at Jia A level, also some that uses SP on FH too.
I met up with 2 of them (Shaanxi players) when they visited me in Dec

I think with the new ball, we may just see a bit more of these SP penholders

But yes, overall, SH is more and more common now for the new generation, compared to say 10 years ago.
Lots of older/social/retired or coaches are Cpen, but mostly produce SH players

Keep an eye out for Xue Fei(薛飞), 14, joined the second string China national team just last December. First player from Wuhan, Hubei after Zhan Jian and Liu Guozheng in over a decade. Liu Guoliang commented his RPB is stronger than Wang Hao's when he was at that age.

In Germany we have one junior who is playing with Cpen and RPB. He is 17 and a member of Germanys Boys national team.

http://www.tischtennis.de/jugend/young_stars/86//

At the world junior championships he made it to round 2 where he lost against Sambe Kohei 4:2. Both are playing for the same team in Germanys 2nd Divison.

This was last years national youth championships. He won his group and played this match in round 2. In round 3 he was eliminates by his older brother Qiu Liang who is playing SH.

Kind Regards

I would say based on the video zeio provided earlier in the thread, he's definitely playing with inverted on both sides.

Zhao Zihao. Like Xu Xin, he was a "product" of Cao Yanhua TT School in Shanghai.

Recent winner from Pyong Yang open, Sun Chen from China. SP on FH, and inverted RPB. As far as I know, she is the only female to won the singles title with penhold grip.
