There's a nice, short article by a South Korean shakehand player about using short pips on the BH here: http://tabletennis.about.com/od/basicco ... _pips2.htm

I like his advice about "cat and mouse tactics" attacking early with topspin shots to push loopers off the table, then drawing them in with short blocks and then attacking again to drive them back off the table.

That's the sort of article (like basic tactics) I'd like to see about long pips as well... Some of his comments (like fast dead serves) actually apply to all pips, which was great to hear...

Very interesting article. I can easely understand why pushing should be kept to a minimum, but I personally finds it difficult to attack low backspin balls to my sp backhand. I tend to push them back instead of attacking. Maybe it is a question of learning just to hit through the spin.

I liked it too. When I switched to pips I flipped a lot more and I've worked on a roll or small topspin, well described by Kees in the pips folder.

Yes I try yo use the same strategy but often my opening shot is not strong or fast enough. It keeps getting better all the time though, so it´s probably just a matter of more practice.

Good little article Andrew. I don't think I will ever make a good short pips player, but I made my debut with them this week playing 802-40 on my Hurricane King blade. I think maybe the blade is too fast for the SP, but it was fun anyway, and I got to experience how the SP plays. I got out-pushed very easily by the spin loading up to a point where I dipped to the net a lot. If I had read this article first, it may have been a different story, but I don't think so as this tends to be a natural game for me, which is why LP seems to suit better. But I think you have to try everything that you can to at least see if its any good for you. Maybe one day I will change my style well enough to become good with the SP, as I do love to hit, I'm just not as good at it as I am pushing, especially on the BH. But as its pointed out, SP is not a pushers rubber. So I'll just EJ off now back to the LP section

While I can push with short pips it took some adjustment to do so effectively. Key is not to depend on the spin but either drop very short or push very long or at angles, rather than just aiming for the middle of the table.

I use quite a fast blade with short pips, but thin sponge, so that helps. I think many people going from inverted use too thick a sponge.
