Not sure if this has been posted before, but I thought I'd post again in case anyone had not seen this:

Left scale tends to be used by the Euro/Japanese manufacturers, the right scale by Chinese ones like DHS.

That seems about right. The Joola MaXXX 500 is about 38-39 on the DHS scale.

Cobalt, lower is softer. 34-36 is the area most rubbers are in. A lot of players who dont work the sponge hard can afford to go much softer than that, even into the 20s. Players with a strong forehand will prefer something around 38 degrees and some of the proffesional Chinese go up to 42 degrees on the forehand while still using about 36 on the backhand. I'm pretty happy with anything between 37 and 39 on the forehand. 36 feels a little soft but I don't mind down to low 30s on the backhand.

It does seem to me that most of the rubber I've encountered (mainly cheaper Chinese) is in the 39-42 range. You really have to look around to find anything softer - Yasaka ZAP and Palio CJ8000 are two I've found. ZAP does come in 33-35. A few come with harder sponge (999T comes in 45-46).

European and Japanese rubber would be a different matter, of course...

729 supersoft is about 35deg (their scale).

In general what type of player would want soft or hard.

I've been trying to find 729 Super Soft, but it doesn't seem to be available from Eacheng et al. I did come across something I'd forgotten about, though - 729 makes a "German Series" and a "Japanese Series":

http://eacheng.net/index.php?act=product&CategoryID=592
http://eacheng.net/index.php?act=product&CategoryID=593

The "German" ones have a leopard's face on the packaging.

729 "Hero Cream", for instance:

http://eacheng.net/index.php?act=detail&ID=889

They say "Degree: Soft". Maybe I should write to them and ask them how many degrees "Soft" is.

In search of enlightenment, I went to DHS-sports.com, since it's this brand that seems to generate the most buzz when it comes to Chinese equipment. I've been avoiding buying any of it, mainly because it's expensive, and due to a bad experience - gee, what, over 30 years ago - of a sheet of PF4 where the topsheet came off the sponge. It's also really, really confusing. Well, in many ways I'm still very confused (when DOES one select Skyline, or select Hurricane? How about 2 and 3? The writeup suggests that H3 is what you select if your loop is weak!), I did find out some interesting things with regard to sponge hardness.

In the DHS line, Hurricane and Skyline come in max thickness and 39, 40, 41, sometimes 42. I assume when they write 39/40/41 they mean three different sponge hardnesses are available, that it does NOT mean "40-42" in the way 729 or 999 uses it. Tin Arc and Dipper comes with softer sponge - 33, 35, 37 in the case of the new TinArc 5 (4 is missing, as it always is..) . Thin sponge seems to be non-existent (only TNT has it, it seems, and the thinnest is 1.6mm).

So again, it seems to me that, at least with Chinese rubber, 39-42 seems to be "standard" - soft sponge is available but it seems to be out of the ordinary.

Yes, Hurricane 3 and Skyline 3 have huge sale amounts in China, and 39 and 40 degree ones are by far the best sellers. Some players using harder blades like Rosewood 7 would choose 38 degree.
In contrast, if a people says he uses a 41 degree rubber, we might believe he is a beginners who has made a wrong choice due to lack of knowledge. Otherwise, he might be a professional player having immense forehand power. We would joke:" Are you Wang Liqin?"

Does anyone know whether DHS, Palio and Yinhe use the same hardness scale or not? Friendship 729 uses different hardness scale than DHS for sure.
Is Palio 36 degrees=Yinhe 36 degrees= DHS 36 degrees or not?
If not- please advise how they compare?

I've been referring to this a bit lately and find it really useful but wondering if still valid for most of the Chinese brands if so what brands use what scales ie

Chinese: 729 , DHS, Haifu, Galaxy, Giant Dragon ??

Euro: Andro, Stiga, Donic, Tibhar ??

What about TSP, Nittaku ??
