You can probably teach them a few things... like the basics.

I've toyed with the idea of how to build stuff to test the claims people make about rubber and blades (both the manufacturers, and here as well) - things like quantifying "throw angle" and "gears", for example. Or "flexible" in the case of blades. The first step, of course, would be to define exactly what is meant by these terms!

I think ITTF would be more interested in designing equipment to enforce compliance with rules. And invent new ones (rules) and ways to test for those... ;)

The ITTF federation and the university's Institute for Sports Research (ISR) were already working together on a unique prototype machine before they announced the joint lab.
Research on this machine, which was designed to test the bounce of balls off table tennis bats to ensure that they meet competition standards, will continue under the joint lab.

As far as I know, there are no "competition standards" to regulate the ball bounce on the bat.
And the "Ball Bounce Trial Project" as initiated by Japanese TTA was discontinued by now; it was found to be unfeasible.
