I've read a few posts on the subject of PH grips, but I'm still not clear on whether it's common to change your grip in the middle of a point when switching from reverse penhold backhand to traditional penhold backhand? Specifically, is the positioning of the thumb or the pressure applied by the thumb supposed to change at all when you switch from RPB to TPB during the point? I've seen some information that suggests the thumb should be looser and even move up the handle slightly when making the traditional backhand stroke, compared to the RPB where the thumb stays wrapped more tightly and closer to the index finger.

Thanks.

Hi,

although I'm just playing for about half a year - I'll try to give you an answer anyway.
You'll have to switch the grip in terms of variing the pressure of the thumb and index finger. It's a core concept of the traditional BH to release the pressure of the thumb to close blade (you might even push a bit with your thumb resting on the side of your handle!) while at the same time applying more pressure with your index finger. You won't be able to close your blade enough if (heavy) topspin is incoming, but it also depends on how flexible your wrist is! With the RPB, you use the thumb to adjust the angle, so switching to the TBH, you'll have to change the grip.

I saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrrIDgT6TnY

This guy's pretty good with the RPB ;) , and he's explaing the subtle changes your fingers will have to do.

Not to have a good grip on the blade, one also runs the risk of getting an injury. That's my bitter experience.

All the best,
Yours,
Dennis
