Yes it's my collection (actually a part of it). Of course we can chat about vintage bats and blades, it's always a pleasure for me. :)
What's your name (you can give it to me by PM if you prefer) ?

Great!
I find your blog very useful when trying to determine the identity of bats.

Sandpaper! That explains the blue racket.

38mm balls??? I suppose if they want to go REAL early they'd have to raise the net another half inch.. ;)

That is absolutely amazing, especially after you realize there's more than one page of bats under each heading. Nine pages of hardbats alone. There's even one or two post-52 pre-59 bare sponge bats. Looks like the old lacquered-handle-with-the-portrait style wasn't confined to Stiga - there are hardbats from much earlier that are like that. And flared handles - quite a few hardbats had them too, and black rubber was a great deal more common than I thought it was (mainly in the hardbat era - I think red predominated in the early sponge era, along with green and blue). Few penhold bats, there seem to be a couple of crude Japanese penhold blades from the hardbat era. And those weird "ergonomic" blades aren't a new invention, either. Some of those rackets were in the Butterfly catalog when I first started playing - the Kenny, for instance.

Oh, by the way - 11 points or 21 points? ;)

21. In France, we can still play in 21 in hardbat events.

Well done to Englishman Andrew Baggaley on winning the World Championship of Ping Pong yesterday, beating Alexander Flemming in the final after winning out against last year's champion Maxim Shmyrev in the semi final.

I wasn't a fan before but I have to say there were some fantastic matches on the weekend and the standard seemed a lot better than in previous years when Maxim Shmyrev was head and shoulders the best player.

Yes the other players who I talked to all thought that the general standard was getting much stronger. More young players training seriously for the event. Certainly it was too strong for me -though i was probably a bit unlucky to get Pistej in my first game..

video of the final:

I am not sure about this event....

The idea, I believe, was to take it back to basics, as modern TT has too short rallies, and is not watchable.

But, with the level of players in this tournament, would they have long rallies against each other in normal TT? I watched Rumgay and Doran recently in a regional event, great long rallies.

When the top top players ( e.g.Chinese) play this, would they eventually take it to such a level where it becomes serve and attack anyway? Back to square one?

I found it frustrating watching some players make poor basic errors. I really enjoyed the semi's and final - gripping exciting stuff.

If they televised regional events, lower level, and invested in coverage (the commentry etc by Sky was very good, esp compared to what we see on Eurosport - half the time I record TT and I get cycling!). Build peoples interest in their local players, playing longer rallies, get them watching and they will want to then tune into national events, and then the world events.

What Hearn is telling us, is like saying, you don't want to watch Barcleona and Messi, you want to watch Crew Alexandra....and sometimes it's fun, but there is room for both....hopefully PP will generate interest in TT - and get companies to take a punt on that. Write to your local tv company, get it on the news for starters!

Yeah it's been interesting as the standard has improved to watch how it's moved away from hard bat as I've seen in videos on here and closer to a reversed game (but without the exaggerated spin). Possibly only one outright defender there on the weekend?

I wonder if Hearn possibly missed a trick and should have raised the net to 6 1/2 inches? But then possibly the top players would be less willing to join in as they would need too much of an adjustment to their usual game?

I think they missed a trick shying away from the pro game coz of the advanced rubbers...people like to hear about technology in sport - formula 1 for example...I think they'd be fascinated if when you watch TT they discussed equipment, educated the viewer, instead of leaving them baffled - give them something to watch for one serves etc.

Would a viewer pick up a sandpaper type bat and be able to play and enjoy themselves?

More likely to happen with a more forgiving sponge bat.....and then they could try spins they saw described on tv.

I think the PP should have been a one off...followed by a re-launching of real TT on tv.
