Ah.. Found a picture of the typical cheap Japanese penhold Biriba bat from the 1970s. These were the most commonly encountered bat if you were a schoolkid at the time. Chinese bookstores were where you would find them. Don't see these around any more, compare to the new ones from the earlier post. The new ones are a lot fancier.

From the ITTF museum.

One ply doesn't necessarily have less power. The few one ply hinoki blades I tried have very good speed and power. Not sure about other materials one ply.

Thanks for the reply.

So what significance does the ply have on the shot? Why choose one ply over 5 ply?

The one ply hinoki blades are very thick (typically 9-13mm). This makes them quite fast (and heavy). The good ones are also very expensive for various reasons.

For that I suggest you read on properties of wood in tt blade making, interesting stuff, theres reason certain wood is used as core, some used as surfaced, benefits, advantage, disadvantage, some are used because they're light, some for its hardness. One ply mostly will purely reflect the wood's properties in tt , while multi plies of same wood generally is to add stability, maybe add control or speed , depends on what wood it is using. And lastly combination of plies tend to derives the unique properties of each wood and amalgam it into a blade that suitable to each unique , quirky individual such as me *huff*

Plywoods generally:

1) are stiffer in the crosswise direction (because some of the layers have grain going in that direction).
2) damp high frequency vibrations (which is why soundboards on high quality musical instruments usually are not plywood).

So I'd expect a five ply blade to be physically stiffer crosswise compared to a one ply OF THE SAME THICKNESS, plus it'll feel "softer" (i.e. the sound generated by the ball striking the blade is lower frequency and of lesser amplitude). However note that they don't make single ply blades of the same thickness as five ply blades (which are typically 5.5-6.5mm thick) - they'd probably warp of split over time if you did. They make them a lot thicker, and on the good ones the annual rings are normal to the blade surface (otherwise the blade will warp when the wood shrinks over time or when the humidity changes). These thick, single ply blades are made to get a certain FEEL, I think. They'd actually feel fairly HARD (i.e. high frequency vibrations) and you'd get a lot of vibrations, since there's no glue layers or layer interfaces to absorb the sound waves. They're supposedly very good for looping, and were very popular with Japanese/Korean players when Japanese Penhold was the dominant style there (back in the late 1960s to the 1970s).

One ply Hinoki feels soft to very soft. I had played with three before. Juic Kiso Hinoki, which I now regretted selling years ago. Darker Speed 90 (not mine), and also Kokutaku 3008, which I still have. All Kiso Hinoki, all soft. Even Hurricane 3 40/41 degree felt soft on them.

Wouldn't say it's too heavy either. Various 5-7 ply all blades at around the same weight or more.

It is thick, around 9.3-9.4mm. I think the Juic Kiso Hinoki I had was 8mm, Darker Speed 90 was 9mm.

Edit: found my old note, Juic Kiso Hinoki FL was 87.9gr with 8.5mm thickness. Got it 8 September 2008. 8-)

Maybe, maybe not, but Darker disagrees...

Not surprised, it's supposed to be a cheap bat. And Haggis keeps mentioning that cheap Chinese one plies are often pine. Mind you, there's a big variety of pines. American yellow pine and white pine are very different, even at a lumber yard. Pine and hinoki are both softwoods (conifers), so they're not too far off. I can't imagine a one ply oak blade, for instance.. or walnut..
