Thanks for the follow up questions guys!

Once I get the answers to the first lot of questions, I'll ask if he can answer some more.

I should also note that Saive said he hasn't actually decided if he'll formally nominate for the position... he needs to know first if he'll actually have a chance of winning the position. He said he's been reading our comments with interest, which will hopefully encourage him. ;)

Here is a couple good reasons;

I cant think of any good attemps by ITTF to promote table tennis for new players. Like make a video to distribute to schools.

I see lots of bad ideas, the top one being the introduction of TTX. That had to cost a lot of money and in my opinion just detracts from the sport of table tennis.

I still have no answer to my question; Does the TTX equipment need ITTF approval?

Jean-Michel Saive has my vote! :)

I second that, Hookshot.
What's the point of TTX? Beeing attractive for recreational purposes but isolating westerners even more from the Asian continent?
I am no friend of superleagues where only the top-50 or so are playing each other and enthousiasts stands almost no chances to meet them in competition, meanwhile the youth has to start very early with very advanced training because otherwise there's barely a chance to reach for the top. The possibility to make a living out of it thanks to talent and invested training is even farther away; high investments and low - if any - returns, that's table-tennis.

I voted for Saive (like everyone else). The election is probably rigged, however. :n:

I have a question:

The ITTF has now made it legal to coach players between points. So players don't even need to think for themselves anymore.

Do you think it would be better to ban all match-time coaching, forcing players to develop the ability to think and analyse the game themselves?

I would agree with that 100%. The best player on the day should win the match, not the player that can afford the best coach.

It would mean that players would need to become complete players, not just robots who follow the instructions of others. It's unbelievable that the ITTF would make that rule change when the main complaint of modern TT is that it's too robotic. Do the ITTF ever listen to anyone anymore?

It's bad decision after bad decision. The reason why TT was not 'TV friendly' in the old days was because of extremely low resolution TVs and bad camera angles. If we still had the same TV technology today, TT would be just as TV unfriendly.

However now we have cheap HD TVs and higher quality recordings. We can see the ball clearly. It wouldn't matter if there was speedglue or 38mm balls, we could see the ball now. The excitement and speed of the 38mm game might make it more exciting and TV friendly. Now I don't see why anyone would watch TT, as it's robotic, slower, less diverse and generally more boring.

Now there are great camera angles, like in the youtube 'best of' videos of the russian league. Of course the ITTF hasn't tried this, they prefer the overhead-million-miles-away view to make it look like tennis. :?: If I wanted to watch tennis, I'd watch tennis. Tennis does tennis better than table tennis does tennis. :P

since it is a known fact that players boost and this however is non-detectable: would he encourage to reverse the speed glue/booster ban?

since the ittf has no measuring device in halls to actually test the amount of milli-newton of pimples: would he be for reversing the frictionless long pimple ban?

since it is a known fact that plastic balls either are not durable or have awful spin properties: would he be in favour of reinstating celluloid balls?

Well he's finally announced

Saive Becomes 3rd Candidate for ITTF President

Former world number one Jean-Michel SAIVE (BEL) has announced that he will stand for President of the International Table Tennis Federation at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, on 19 January 2017.

The election will be held at the Annual General Meeting to be staged in Dusseldorf on Wednesday 31st May during the Liebherr 2017 World Championships. Jean-Michel SAIVE lines up alongside Germany's Thomas WEIKERT and Qatar's Khalil AL-MOHANNADI, the current respective holders of the offices of President and Deputy President.

The deadline for National Associations to submit nominations for Presidential candidates is 30 April 2017.
47-year-old Jean-Michel SAIVE had a glittering international career, which saw him reaching the final of the World Championships in 1993, becoming the 1994 European Champion and competing in seven straight Olympic Games.
In his words, the current Chair of the Athletes Commission of the European Olympic Committee issued a 11 Point Programme at the press conference:

1-0 TABLE TENNIS FIRST, ITTF FIRST
My motto is Table Tennis First, ITTF First. The ITTF is very ambitious in trying to make table tennis one of the top sports in the World and the ITTF one of the top federations in the World. We must create an atmosphere of 'Excellence' in all ITTF activities.

2-0 CONSULTATION AND COMMUNICATION
All major decisions will be made only after extensive consultation with the member national associations and all stakeholders, this includes any major decisions affecting the World Table Tennis Championships. In particular, we will increase 'two-way' communications with our Continental Federations, National Associations, the Board of Directors, and all groups that work on the development of our sport.

3-0 SPORT FOR ALL

At the heart of my candidacy, there is a desire that is fundamental to me: I want to pay more attention to the base of our sport, the hundreds of millions of players who are in love with table tennis! The ITTF must be a federation for all and not just for the elite. I would also like to integrate the World Veteran Championships and the Veteran Circuit into the ITTF's competition programme.

4-0 ITTF ROLE MODELS
In consultation with the Continental Federations, we will appoint Athlete Role Models, one male and female from each Continent, to promote our sport.

5-0 CLOSER RELATIONS WITH THE IOC AND THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT
The ITTF could and should be much closer to the IOC. One of my major aims is to increase the number of events and medals at the Olympic Games.

6-0 DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION
The ITTF has one of the best development programmes in the world of sport. The ITTF staff and volunteers work extremely hard on a daily basis, with limited funds and resources, to develop our sport worldwide. My intention is to double the development budget and to provide the necessary human resources to spread our sport throughout every part of the world.

7-0 EQUIPMENT AND QUALITY OF TABLE TENNIS BALLS

Players at all levels, especially at lower levels, complain about the poor quality of table tennis balls. I will personally visit our manufacturer partners.

8-0 STABILITY

My intention is to convince all levels of decision-makers within the ITTF not to make any more changes to our rules (Laws of Table Tennis) for a set period of time. Instead, out of official competitions, we can welcome experiments and tests to evaluate the impact changes would have. I believe that we need this period of stability.

9-0 MARKETING AND PRESENTATION OF OUR SPORT
The ITTF is revitalizing its marketing strategies. Our goal should be to introduce new sponsors and advertisers from different parts of the world and to provide them with a high return on their investment in terms of the promotion and visibility of their product. We must make table tennis more 'fashionable'.

10-0 GOOD GOVERNANCE
Good governance and good management is my number one priority. We will ensure that the ITTF follows all aspects of good management and respects all principles of good governance.

11-0 LEADERSHIP AND TEAM CONCEPT
Table tennis has the distinction of being both an individual and a team sport. It was a privilege to have competed not only as an individual, but also as a very passionate team member. I intend to lead the ITTF as a team player.

I think it's hilarious that the whole forum unanimously wants Wiekert out!

I like his program, although I'd prefer he'd say to go back in time when it comes to rules. I understand he advocates for stability, but I hope after stability comes revolution for a better and more exciting TT with a variety of styles.

TBH he stands no chance against the corruption of the other two, but I hope I'm wrong.

I agree. It'll be tough for JMS to topple the Sharara Crime Family.

Isn't there a petition or something where we as the base could make an impressive statement for the ITTF?

Might be a good idea, if we can reach thousands and thousands of TT fans. I don't know if that's possible.
