Yes! Validation of the EJ lifestyle! Now the waxed-table practice by the CNT before the World Teams Championships makes more sense…

Hat tip to Ben Larcombe, who posted this link on his Expert Table Tennis Academy FB page:

http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists- ... ce-as-fast

""What we found is if you practise a slightly modified version of a task you want to master, you actually learn more and faster than if you just keep practising the exact same thing multiple times in a row," said lead researcher Pablo Celnik, from Johns Hopkins University.

…Celnik said the key was adjusting things subtly - for example, adjusting the size or weight of a baseball bat, tennis racket or soccer ball in between practise sessions.

"If you make the altered task too different, people do not get the gain we observed during reconsolidation [of memories after training sessions]. The modification between sessions needs to be subtle," he added."

I think Brett was mentioning this some time ago - it's in that thread on the phone app. Or maybe the Shot thread. I'll see if I can find those posts.

Ah so setups with small changes fits better than big ones.

Andddd once a month of new blade acquisition is still counted like limited ejing right? :D

I think the key thing is not to change too many variables at once. I think in a friendly match, or for half an hour during training, it's worthwhile trying different things out. You'll learn about the way you experience equipment changes.

Another worthwhile thing to do is to play with hardbat - it gives very interesting feedback and rewards good technique.

+1 on hardbat , when you loop a lot in your normal play, hardbat teaches you how to win on placement and deception ( I don't do it a lot but in my office i do that against newer players).

Interesting idea. So if using a robot focus on different targets and having differing amounts of spin in a practice session?

Yeah variety is always a good thing, maybe placements of ball left right of the side of table, focus on the placements first then add the speed whenever you are ready.

So does this mean the inconsistent bounce of plastic balls is actually good for your practice because you're having to adjust to different things very quickly. Maybe we should all practice with a complete mix match of types of balls and have to adapt accordingly. Let's face it, if someone spins the ball more than someone even identicle balls will bounce differently, so the variations in different types of balls could be good practice.

this is what we at our club are already doing...at our league in the 1st round we played against a team that is using btty g40+ and we lost horribly...so we are now training with 5 different types of balls...and deliberately picking not the round ones...

I do something similar with my coach when I'm burning out. I toss the inverted and pull out the short pips and start hitting the s*** out of the balls. It's in my opinion that short pips were created out of necessity as a form of table tennis anger management.
