I've been putting it off for a long time, because it's a lot of work :( , but we've finally done an upgrade to the OOAK online Shop. The major reason for upgrading were:
1. The site needed to compatible for tablets/phone use (responsive), because the old site was very hard to use on phones/tablets
2. The old software was causing some compatibility issues, so it needed to be upgraded to the latest version anyway.

Although we're still sorting out some issues, I would really appreciate some feedback on how it looks now, and any suggestions for improvement. So if you guys could take a quick look, that would be awesome:

Hi Haggisv, I've had a look at the website and here's some things that I think is needed. As you would be aware, I'm very familiar with your old site. The new one does look fresher and cleaner however I don't think its as user friendly.

I can't find the ability to sort by price. This is a massive issue for me as someone who is always purchasing on a budget either for myself or the club. The manufacturer tab also appears to be gone so you now just have to randomly scroll through endless pages of random products. Perhaps the manufacture could be added to the drop down menus on the side or just have it how it was before.

The product pictures are way too big and there are limited products and lots of wasted space on each product, only 10. I'd rather see more on the page at the expense of larger pictures. When shopping, its quite tedious in going through page after page and when comparing you then need to remember what page the product you want to compare to is on and go back. If you want to see a bigger picture then generally you'd click on the item and have a look in the description.

I'll let you know if any other thing crop up.

There seems to be some display problems on Firefox, where everything looks too big and wide. :( :( :(

Just buy something through the new website on iPhone.

Few things I have noticed:

- some sections (on the drop down of the side column)are not in english, "about us", "customer service"
- when I check out, some sections need to choose, e.g. Pick up at shop or shipping... the "selected" button is difficult to see, I am unsure the preferred option is selected.

- correct me if I am wrong. I remember I could choose to deliver by ordinary shipping or by express post in the past. But now seems I do not have this option.

In general, appreciate the updated / new website.

Thanks.

I'd like to see:
sort by price/a-z/discount/etc
number of products displayed: 10/20/all or similar number breaks.

I dont think the first dropdown "shop" is necessary. Either keep shop and get rid of the categories down the right hand side, or get rid of shop.

Also, possibly, too much clutter on the first page. If it was dynamic, sure, eg advertising specials, etc. But not static content, eg, your important links down the right hand side that appear on every single page.

Hi Haggisv,
I'm not overly keen on the way the site looks on my iPhone (safari): it takes ages to scroll through to find anything and it just looks like everything has been stretched vertically. But I will have a look on my laptop and see what I think.

EDIT:
I've had a look on my laptop and I do like the visuals. However, it feels like there's a lot of wasted space, whereas the old version seemed a little quicker to navigate. Of course, that could just be the fact that we're all used to the old version - I'm sure we'll all adjust quickly - after all, it's not a big adjustment, and it's certainly not going to drive potential customers away.

Hope my feedback gives some sort of assistance! :)

I shop mainly on my PC and use Firefox with adbockers and noscript active. I have a dual monitor setup - one monitor is an old 4:3 17inch monitor which I prefer for browsing as a lot of websites are still optimised for 4:3 layout - it's native resolution is 1280*1040. The other is a 23 inch 1920*1080 tv which doubles as a monitor.

This is a short video of how your new website looks on these two monitors using Firefox. Both monitors are on at the same time and both monitors are opening the OOAK Shop website in their own tab. It shows how the user viewing experience differs depending on which monitor I use. The 1280*1040 monitor is on the left and the 1920*1080 on the right.

First impresssions, the image of the Re-Impact blade is very 3Dish which is an interesting viewing experience, but when I'm shopping, I'm interested in the speed a page loads and how easy it is to navigate around and find what I want.

Home Page:

1. I like the clean layout and the white background on my 4:3 monitor and your website seems optimised to work best in that format. At 1920*1080 there is a lot of dead space either side of your web page. I can zoom in on the monitor to fill that dead space but I really don't want to.

2. I'm not sure your top banner headline works where you incorporate your logo and the OOAK Shop text. You've got multiple fonts with different sizes. It makes it seem a bit messy. If you've one font, two max I think it would work better - there are lots of topics on the internet for best fonts for different purposes.

3. To the right of the logo you've got lots of dead space on both screens. I like the currency at the top on the right, along with the home, log in options etc but there's space there because your logo has a lot of depth to it. You could take advantage of that space and move your contact and shipping details links to this location leaving you free to remove them from your main menu index bar and replace them with more relevant topics.

4. Linked to pt 3 I think having separate drop down tabs for "about us", "customer service", "information", and "contact us" is overkill. You could almost merge all those 4 under "about us" which would leave you free to provide drop down lists for "blades", "rubbers" etc along the top bar. I find it much easier to navigate when the search options I want can be found near the top of the webpage rather than having to scroll down the page.

5. You can see in the video, as you scroll down the home page, on the 1920 * 1080 screen there is more and more blank space as you get towards the bottom, far more than on the 1280*1040 screen but regardless of the screen resolution, I've still to scroll down through that blank space to get to the bottom of the page where there are more navigation options. That's time I feel as a customer is "wasted" so I'm more likely to get bored and leave the website.

6. You have an important links section down the right hand side of the home page but it's huge. By definition, important suggests limited in number but that's not the case here. Again there is duplication. "About us", "contact us" is listed first in the important links list but these links already exist very close by in the drop down tabs on the main menu bar.

I'm also not sure what purpose that "Important links" serves. Important for who and why. There seems to be a mismatch of links to information articles about table tennis, products, links to manufacturers, site map, Site overview. It's not in alphabetical order, or subject/topic order. To be honest, I'd go through that list, group similar topics together, take them off the home page and link to them under your information tab at the top of the home page. That would give you much more space to use on the home page for "shop product information and offers". Put bluntly, I've come to shop, not be educated or redirected elsewhere.

7. Your column on the left of the screen has a similar issue for me. Lot's of cateogories. I'd group them together under common headings and limit those heading numbers to the number which will display on devices first landing screen where you don't have to scroll down. Again, if the headings are clear, people will expect to have to click on them to find exactly the type of information they need and infromation which relates only to that need.

8. I'd move the "search" function either to the top of the screen or the top of the left hand column.

9. You could also move your SSL secured logo to the top right of the screen near the shopping cart link. If I'm shopping that's the type of info I like to see first up.

Basically there is so much information on the home page, in no obvious order I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve. In the end it comes across as too much, with no particular logic to it. With so much duplication, you're also creating work for yourself - for example "about us" appears in 4 different places, "contact us" in 6 different places etc. This will make it harder for you to maintain. I wouldn't have any duplication on your home page, keep it clean, simple, with the main headings only which are clearly recognisable and then link in to other web pages if you want to delve down deeper in to that topic area.

Secondary pages: for example "blades".

1. The background on table tennis blades, I'd have on a separate information page, or at most I'd have one line which links in to that "separate" page if people won't to know that type of information. As a specialist table tennis shop, I don't think your customer base will be too interested in having that type of info here. I don't want to have to scroll down through text to actually find what I linked in to that page to find in the first place.

2. The filter options are set by manufacturer. I'd rather have a smaller drop down list to choose from based on "Type". Why? Because you've provided an explanation of the different types of blades above the filter option so that's what I'd expect to see in the filter list. I know you have this on the home page on the left side but there is no consistency in how you search on the website. Too many different ways of doing things and trial and error if you select the correct navigation option to suit your needs.

3. As I'm a visual type of person, I like the images. They peak my interest but only when I'm browsing and they will slow the page load times down.

4. Your monthly specials are at the bottom of the page. I'll not see them unless I bother to scroll down to the bottom. You could move them to the top - just like supermarkets put products they want to promote at the entrance to their stores, not at the back of them.

5. I like the fact you list the number of products available in that cateogory, but sometimes I'm only interesting in looking through products you have in stock. Is there a filter option to do that?

6. It looks like you're trialing different "sort by options" on your Penhold page you have both the "filter results by" option and a different format of "sort by" option where you've listed "item name" and "price+". I like to filter by price because if I'm experimenting I'm only willing to risk a small budget so price filtering is key. But when I read "item name" do you mean, manufacturer first or the model first and when searching by "price+" is this cheapest first or most expensive first. Ebay uses this type of filtering.

One thing I did find missing, there's no "testimonial" option for where I can check to see what your customers say about you.

Final observation, you have a link to "site overview". This is very helpful and is a good "one stop shop point" for customers but it's hidden away down the right hand side in the "important links". I'd much prefer to see this as one of your drop down main menu heading topics but I wouldn't call it "site overview". In other websites I've visited, site overview lists all the different topics and links on the website. This "site overview" page is more like an "equipment help page".

I know this post may come over as very critical but it's meant with the best intentions. Sometimes having too many options to choose from when building a website can cause chaos instead of clarity and that's what I'm experiencing when I visit your shops website.

As a customer, I want a web page which loads quickly, maximises my viewing experience so I don't have to scroll over and over to get to the bottom of a page, has relevant menu options and the important info at the top of the page, is simple to navigate, well organised and safe/secure to use.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment haggisv.

I'm not a fan of the blurb at the top of each section, eg

Table Tennis Blades

A table tennis blade is the heart of your bat, so it's important to choose one that suits your style & level. You can fine-tune your bat by choosing suitable rubbers, and the combination determines the ratings of the overall bat.

etc etc

Maybe if it's short like the above, then throw in a "see more" button that unrolls the rest of the blurb. It's something that you might want to read once, but not every time you enter the section
