I have a club mate who knows him well from Russia, so will ask. He played in Zagreb Open last year, per Ratings Central. He also played in Florida recently, I think Bogeyhunter has a video of match against him.

OK, apparently my friend does not really know him that well - they are from the same city, though. He's (or was?) playing in Russian Premier League for St. Petersburg club and just about turned 40. I have not watched enough of the finals video - but his style looked different compared to usual suspects.

Westchester results are already processed - he ended up very close to 2700, and it looks like his toughest match was against Jian Li, which went 5 games.

Gave 'Becks method' a try last night - slight headache in the morning, but no major game improvement yet. Will go to the club to see if it helped.

@japsican - yea, style adjustments will do that. Looking back my shot selection was all messed up last night, on both wings. Weird, but have to deal.

Out of desperation tried to twiddle on BH and it actually worked a couple of times, as in 'won me a point because opponent did not expect heavy backspin'.

Contemplating FH

So, on Wednesday a club mate ('Hi, A!') tells me this: 'Your FH contacts the side of the ball, not the top of it. Great for spin avoidance, but you end up sending them long a lot'. Which I sort of knew - everyone tells me that my FH is too vertical and does not go forward enough.

Dug up a video of old training session (thanks, NL). Look at 26:00 mark (can't embed the link with time tag ).



Basically my wrist is always pointing down, on backswing I also drop right shoulder and my arm, so paddle ends up way below the table and it's hard to make forward motion from there. I guess the simple fix is to try to rotate shoulders/body while keeping shoulders level. I did it today during warm up, but suspect it kind of went away during matches

So - any additional pointers and advice?

You can already loop, no matter what is you think is wrong with your loop, so what you need to do in practice is loop a lot of different balls and try to see what happens when you try to change the quality of ball you are producing and how that is affected by your changing your swing. There really is no other way. At this point, any asking for advice will send you back to square one, and you won't get the kind of advice that is practical for you (and the only advice that is practical for you is basically the one I gave you).

Basically, as long as your swing is healthy and not causing any bodily injury, there are two things you focus on in practice:

1. Trying to get more racket head speed as that enables you to loop with more spin without sacrificing speed. Usually means improved timing, body usage and whip.
2. Trying to loop more balls with different incoming spins and locations relative to where you are to produce balls with different outgoing degrees of spin and quality. Usually means reading the ball, preparing to produce a certain outcome and often involves some footwork or adjusting to the ball.

The swing itself is about where the racket starts, where the racket contacts the ball, and where the racket finishes. All of these are linked, and your finishing and starting racket position and angle will impact how you contact the ball. And of course, all these things will impact the ball you produce.

As you practice more and loop the ball in more and more different ways but with largely the same swing, occasionally getting tips from players watching you in real time, but mostly using the quality of the outgoing ball for feedback to see how well you read the incoming ball and whether you produced the ball you intended to produce, you learn to make your swing a flexible and adaptable thing, not a robot that just does the same thing every single time without adjusting to the incoming ball. The swing should feel similar, but should still be flexible enough to produce the ball you want to produce. If the ball hooks, you contacted or came around the right side more. If the ball fades, you contacted or came around the left side more. If the ball goes straighter, it has a higher element of topspin, though there are ways of giving the ball a good element of topspin while it still kinda curves.

Here is some looping practice - around 7 minutes in, I start playing around with my loop a little. There are many ways of doing this, so this is just one example. But the bottom line is that there is no way to understand your stroke if all you are doing is trying to put the ball on the table.

Anther 'stellar' league night, 0:5, I believe. At least this time lost a close one in 5 and took games off players. Sometimes.
