As you said, I really can't stand the thought of a middle-aged white bloke saying "cho" :D I just find it properly embarrassing and cringeworthy.

"Good" is very similar - short, easy, forceful. Just, er, it's actually in our native language ;)

I don't mind my opponent saying "cho", doesn't wind me up or anything - often gives me a little giggle. I dislike seeing any player do it when an opponent has made an unforced error though. In that case, it's OK to say "come on" or "use it" or something, but you shouldn't be celebrating a genuinely unforced error IMO

Oh and I do use "howay" a lot, but that's a bit of regional dialect.

You'll also hear me repeatedly muttering "come on" very quietly, over and over again, if it's a tense game. Just to try and block out any potential for negative thoughts!

Why I don't 'Cho!'

1) I'm English, not Chinese. It sounds stupid coming from anybody who isn't Chinese.

2) If anybody who isn't a table tennis follower watches the sport for the first time, they will be bemused by legions of players shouting what seems like nonense (unless they happen to be Chinese).

3) I've been in the game a long time. Until the likes of Saive came along, people didn't shout much at all. It's rude, aggressive in a self-centred way. You can win, get psychological advantages over the other player, feel confident in yourself just by playing well

4) Mostly, because it's become like a flock of sheep, completely unoriginal - 'oh, everyone shouts 'Cho!' OK I will as well'. They might as well shout 'Sieg heil!'.

So you're saying that cho'ing is incompatible with the proverbial stiff upper lip?

If you want to be really cool, you have to utter something every point. In addition to "Cho!" you can loudly proclaim "Jia Yo!," "Huh," "Huh-saw," "Yo" or "Cho-lay!" It's a sign of respect to other players. Even Samsonov and Boll do it.

Well, if it's for the ironic humor, I'm willing to bet it's obvious that you're doing it more to mock the phenomenon. Even I do that.

What I'm talking about is when people are full-on serious with it. In their heads they're envisioning being like Ma Long, but in reality they look like B-Rad...just trying too hard to be a TT-guy.

Because I don't cheer when I win points, I swear like a sailor in multiple languages when I lose them. I'm a glass half empty kind of guy. Plus children nearby need to learn how to use the language properly.

Damn, just like me, in several languages, but don't care if it is in English either, with lots of salt when I fail to perform. I could flex bicep and kiss it on some opponent's shots, TT is an entertainment business.

I don't Cho because it's utterly pretentious.

Well,

I stand firm that Everyone should use His or Her favourite war cry rather than (sorry) meaningless cho.

Japanese "Banzai!" and "Ikkuyo!" always sound great.

For me, I use "Allahu Akbar!" After successful end game smash point. ;)

I Don't Cho, but I Do:

- Fist Pump
- Yell at myself, call myself names
- capitulate at the particularly horrible nets and edges gone against me (ie a couple in a row)
- "Come on!!!!" with the big points/tight match against a pesky junior
- "Good Boy!" When my bat does what my brain thinks it should do

Don't hear people "cho"ing very much at Weekend Social Doubles but there are lots of complaints. "Where can, like that.." "Cheat!" "Illegal!" (this after someone uses the wood side of their penhold bat). "How laaa... That also can take" (after I loop a short serve into the flower pots diagonally across the short side). "Fluke shot!" is very common. Oh wait. There is one guy who always likes to point out shots he managed to return. "Saw that!" "Saw what!" "You didn't see, like octopus." "What octopus.. more like sotong."

I've started to say "cho" when I win points by edges, nets, and if the opponent faults a serve, as a form or sarcasm. Always with a smile on my face to acknowledge that I'm kidding and that I know I was lucky.
