I was taking the FH rubber off my "good" Sanwei M8 a couple of months ago when the rubber decided to take some decent-sized splinters with it, ruining the blade for regular play. (Yes, now I'm more careful to seal everything.)

Over the weekend I thought I would convert the blade into something like the Nittaku Sign Blade (about 130mm W x 125mm H head), so set about butchering the M8 and filling the splinter holes with Tamiya Putty. My daughter decided she wanted the resulting bat – she normally plays with an M8, so this would be a baby version that I think might be useful for occasional training use, particularly for working on footwork and contact, since it does require more concentration when playing, to ensure you don't miss the ball or hit your fingers.


Yes, I don't have proper tools.

I've glued a used red sheet of old 1.8mm Stiga Agathon to the BH and a used black 729 Super Soft (which to be honest felt super hard and super heavy) to the FH. 10mm XVT foam edge tape finished off the bat.
The cut-down blade weighs 62g (down from ~74g), and the complete weight is 129g.

From experience, the Nittaku Sign Blade plays like a proper bat when built up, and I'd expect the M8 Mini to be the same. We'll give it a go this evening.
