Brett, who did you coach? Maybe you might have a couple of sightings too. I actually watched Duda destroy Heming looking for a sighting...

You were actually on a TV table vs Gnanasekaran. Going to watch now...

I just watched the match online and I agree you played ok. Gnanasekaran would be a 2700+ player (WR 102) and you were legitimately able to win a bunch of points. You consistently served short and returned fairly well which is was very encouraging

Gnanasekaran would train more in one day than Ben trains in a week or two. Also, the quality of his training and competition is obviously far superior. This was Ben's first ever Pro Tour event.

I assume all pros know how to chop at some level. So when they get forced back why do they always lob? Is it because they popped a ball up and it got smashed, so there is no topspin to chop? Is it impossible to chop vs a smash even from way back?

It seems like chopping would be more effective than lobbing at that level, unless it's the tt equivalent of rope-a-dope.

Have you done a video on lobbing? I need to learn the tsunami. My lobs are more like the kiddie pool.

A pro doesn't practice chopping, so it wouldn't be there in a match when they need it. Pros are more likely to mess around lobbing in training.

I'm not sure about making a lobbing video. Just loop the ball very high and aim for the end of the table.

I coached Kane Townsend vs Korea at the same time as the Heming/Duda match. I'll watch the recording of the Heming/Duda match, with Heming, later today. I've been working a lot with Heming on return of serve, so hopefully he was solid.

Duda is ridiculously strong and barely misses a ball. Heming was happy with the way he played, even though he lost 4-0.

So Brett's the coach on the right? Looks like too much hair.. The umpire sure looks like him, though...

No, he's not. On the top 2 tables, the cameras make the coaches headless. Here is a headless ghost coaching and encouraging his fellow leftie...

I hate playing opponents who are almost bulletproof and seem to showboat as a result. Then again, maybe to some folk, I am one of such people, but really, I prefer quick and merciless killings to showing off how impervious you are to my attacks with lobs and high pushes daring me to loop at you so you can counterloop or fish with high arc and make me look like an idiot.

The player is Ben Taylor, who for those who may not know, produces TTEdge videos. No one said the coach was Brett. I just posted the link to a match Brett coached.

He certainly looked the part. Might have looked a bit funny if he was munching on popcorn and whacking some thundersticks.

Didn't see it live but caught the replay a couple hours later. You played a good game Ben, just shows the quality of the next level of players.

Regards

Ben - Mt G

I think we all here dream to play in some pro match and you got to do it!!!!!!! I think you made him play his full game and he was not 'bored'.

We will be able to go over lots of stuff from this match  One thing I noticed is how you got back into the ready position from the pendulum serve - I see one foot move a little back before the serve was touched. Might start some good discussion on match vs practice too!

Footwork drills are a lot of work. I have a feeling I'll be doing these daily for a long time.

Progress on the pivot so far.

It seems that a common theme is that moving to the forehand side is challenging and moving to the backhand feels more natural. I noticed just how tired my left leg is after even a bit of training - which is the leg that needs to do much of the work to move to the forehand side.

I used to agree with exactly what you said Russ, more so because I prefer to pivot than to cross but I ended up concluding that while the strength of the right foot favors the pivot, it becomes about practice and serving as my cross is technically better, but I serve more pendulum and no spin. LTT42 helps a lot and I practiced so much that I don't have basic two step footwork when going to my forehand side so I am using DTT7 to build it for the first time. I suspect that if my knees were fully right, I would serve more reverse serves and backhand serves because I prefer to attack off the cross.
