Hi Everybody,
I have recently discovered that at some stage I have managed to tear my ACL ligament and the meniscus cartilage of my right knee. It looks like I am going to have to wear a brace if I get back to playing at all and my movement will be restricted.

Any suggestions about future playing style/ equipment would be welcome. Blocking off the bounce at the table?

Bulldog

Sorry to hear that! ;( ;( ;( Let's hope they can fix it and you can built up enough muscles around it to protect it.

Yes close-in blocking and hitting/looping would certainly put the least strain on the knee, and the equipment in you signature seems quite suitable already.

I have never worn table tennis shoes.

I bought a pair of Yasaka shoes once and wore them once.

The shock after a long lunge went straight through the feeble amount of shock absorption and in to my leg including my knees.

I wear cross trainers with two insoles to play.

At work standing on concrete I wear walking shoes with three pairs of insoles in each shoe.

At tennis I wear tennis shoes with two insoles in each shoe.

When I play competition tennis - where I try and run every shot down,I revert to my walking shoes with the two insoles.

A lot of knee injuries are impact injuries, caused by the shock of the lunge or coming to a stop after a short sprint like in tennis.

When you do come back - play well within yourself. Do not reach for balls a good bit wide - especially ones out wide to your forehand. Just concede the point!

Maintain your posture forward - even against a powerful attack. Yes,try and play a very efficient style of game.

Above all - rest whenever you feel even slight discomfort.

I tried a match at the end of April before I had a scan confirming my diagnosis and couldn't reach serves wide to my forehand. I will bear what you say in mind. Not optimistic at the moment about table tennis :(

PRICE treatment.

Warmup and cooldown routines.

Drill levels to ramp up and down.

Soft matches, hard ones not at the same time.

Training different muscle groups together.

Training only a specific variety of strokes in one session.

And most importantly DONT PLAY INJURED !

:P Hope some of this helps.

I have developed a knee spur in my right knee from playing to much tennis on hard courts.

Today it was the worst it's ever been - not going to play tennis for 2-3 weeks!

When I got home tonight it was still hurting. I took off my tennis shoes and put my walking shoes on,swapping over the two insoles i use in each of my tennis shoes, four in all.

The pain was considerably less when I walked - almost non existent.

I highly recommend a good pair of walking shoes with double insoles for anyone experiencing knee pain. Good to wear them also when your knees feels ok as a preventive measure.
