I watched Min Hyung Jee playing at the Australian Nationals this week, very impressive. She's playing for Queensland (although recently from Korea), she won every singles game she played!

I noticed she was using on pimple on her backhand, so I asked her what it was... she told me TSP Curl P-1R in OX! The way she uses it I thought it was a short pimple with sponge... very impressive! Look at the point at around 6.35, she uses the pimples so well!

THank PRW for finding the video. Hope you see a lot more of here in future.

Good find. That swipe block/chop is impressive.

I tried using some p1-r OX on an innerforce layer ZLC blade to imitate the style...

Biggest change was when it came to attacking backspin balls (a previous strength of mine) -- I could no longer simply hit through the ball to create top spin! With badman reloaded OX/anti spin, this was an easy shot and a bread and butter attack of mine. You can even see MHJ in the videos above having to use a kind of "loop-hit" against back spin. She's not simply hitting flat, but having to lift up a bit to get the ball over. Aside from that, hitting no spin was pretty easy and serve receives were still quite simple to do. Also less 'freebie' points from spin reversal or 'weird' effects. I think the rubber definitely favors an offensive style! Coming from a more passive backhand block, the p1-r was both fun and annoying (to myself and the opponent, well fun for me at least  )!

Can Confirm T64 on FH, P1R OX on BH on Mizutani blade.

Her LP technique with P1R is different from what many of us have learnt via the european style- In the new year I will be approaching her and working on doing a youtube video on how it works.

We are very lucky to have her in Aus!

Here is the video of the Australian National Championship 2019 final (click on it to start), her match starts at around 15.00. It's a Facebook video, so i hope everyone can see it.

She's now using:
Blade: TSP Hino-Carbon Power
FH: Tenergy 64
BH: TSP Curl P-1r OX

What's the meaning of this, haggis!? Why, there's nothing but dirty pippers in the final!

How does Min do against the best males in aussietown?

My Coach!

She can't quite keep up with the power of the top 5-10 men in australia, but after that pretty much everybody is fair game.

She beats most of us guys in QLD when we have matches/practice matches. so difficult to play.

Wow, lucky you!!!

Perhaps you can share some of the tips she offers when it comes to blocking with the pips? She appears to be always swiping with them either left or right, and she takes the ball quite early.

Yes Haggisv - She doesn't advocate the "chop block" for the very fast topspin attacks or to best handle nospin balls.

The best way I can describe - instead of the chop block where you have a horizontal bat and bring it down - is that you have a diagonal/more vertical angle on the bat (head of the paddle facing downwards) so the angle is "down" but the movement is "sideways" - effectively doubling the chop block effect. however it is really important to take this early and understand the spin; it is much harder to do this with the low friction pips.

She said it is far easier to control and keep the blocks short. This technique helped me so much in the past 12 months to get better at controlling the attacks of the top level players.

Would a video help? I think an instructional video might be on the cards :-)

Thanks SuperHappyFunSlider, you're the man!

I found it interesting that sometimes she swipes left, sometimes right. I've only ever tried swiping from left to right, which seems natural to me. However, thinking about it some more, a lot of serves (and loops) have a lot of sidespin on them. So swiping in the same direction that that will kick off the table might actually be a lot easier to time. I don't know if that's the reasons, but it makes some sense to me. :o Have you ever asked her that SuperHappyFunSlider?

I'm not sure why she does both - I will ask when I see her next for sure! As a left hander, she was coaching me to go from left to right (which is opposite what you're used to) so I'll get her explanation and pass it on.

Video, or Interview? :-)
