Finally, as promised, this is the tutorials for the penholders. By collecting several footages, I want to show to the new players where to apply the pressure in the penhold grip. We are learning the penhold grip from Xu Xin, Wang Hao, Ma Lin and others. I think this video would help you to improve your penhold shots, especially the RPB (Reverse Penhold Backhand).

Very interesting. I always thought you'd have to hook your thumb around the handle, turns out it's not so. Interesting too how the thumb comes up the handle for the Japanese penhold backhand.

EmRatThich ! Your videos are inspirational and most interesting! I've been learning C-pen for so many years!
Nothing I have seen explains how each technique works except for your video and explanation!

Many times I practice and try to perfect which ball to play how by trial and error without understanding why sometimes I am able to play and other times I am missing something. Your videos is an eye-opener for C-pen players like me who dont have coaches knowing C-pen techniques and unwilling to teach different style players.

Thank you !!! And keep all the videos coming!

Thank you man_iii for your kind words.
I'm still learning too, so sometimes my tips is not totally correct. Feel free to correct me.

And this is the new video, in my opinion, it's very important to show to the new players in table tennis.
I'm waiting for your comments ;)

I was watching video of some Chinese Taipei 14-yr old kid who won the National Taiwan tournament. The coach was commenting on how he coached him in high-school and found the kid. He said the player had talent to "hold the ball on the racket" giving him ability to place the ball anywhere and generate very heavy-spin and powerful ball. How to do that ? I can't even think when I am hitting the ball. I just swing my arm praying I will meet the ball in center of my bat. It happens too fast ! How to develop that ability to "hold the ball" ? I don't have talent like the kid and I am almost 40 years old. I still want to learn and play better. Please help me. Your video on spinning is very helpful! To focus on the acceleration on point of contact ! Please keep posting! It is very very useful!

Hi "EmRatThich" I'm looking at your post on the 5th Feb & all the videos are gone so I can't comment on them but I try to always use soft hands holding my blade with my thumb & forefinger & changing my grip as & when needed which along with blade & setup give great control. I also attend Tai Chi classes weekly this gives me great mental control & helps me refocus when needed & not let my emotions get the better of me. :?: 8) Thanks for this post  :*:

2) "Explosiveness" - many parts to this but one interesting point was to relax your GRIP until the moment of contact, when you squeeze harder, and then immediately relax again. Playing with relaxed muscles has been mentioned quite a bit in the past, mainly in discussions with Agenthex and Brett, but the main problem I have is - how to you TEACH someone to "relax" when playing?? Apparently big dividends to be had in terms of speed and power if you can do it.

You can't learn to relax when playing like you study a book or learn to ride a bycicle. Exposure to the stressful events and knowing stress isn't necessary are the only ingredients you need to learn how to relax. That and time.

This is very true....only exposure and experience can help this. that and maybe sports psychology if you have an actual anxiety issue.

I will say that, practicing the technique of relaxing/tensing at impact/relaxing, can be practiced in non-stressful situations (multi-ball). Then, you slowly incorporate that into play. Repeating the behavior, committing neuropathways and muscle memory to the form, will help make it subconcious and doable during game situations.

So, practicing is valuable here...so long as you're doing it right...doing it "right is the other x-factor.

EmRatThich,

Love the videos by the way. My favorite video is the one where you comment about the "Cute" coach doing backhand flicks. And yes, she is cute. Haha

Off course the technique can be trained, but it's useless in match play if you're tense. Being relaxed is the key to being able to replicate what you're doing in training. But how do you relax? By not trying to relax. A lot of people, looking for a quick fix and thinking everything can be solved with their controlling mind, will never get that way of thinking. Letting go = acquiring control.

Anxiety btw works the same way as negative stress: only exposure, preferably gradual, can solve it. This comes from someone who went through a severe anxiety disorder that dominated his day and used the same method to feel good and relaxed during game play again.
