These were the words that people were saying when Liu Shiwen was given the point, that was contested by Zhu Yuling to go up 3-2 in the Uncle Pop 2017 ITTF Women’s World Cup presented by Polar Naturals final!

Take a look for yourself below:

Right now this debate will roll on, but in the future the ITTF will be able to tell the players and fans straight away if the ball was in and out.

“We will test edge ball reviews in 2018 and look to implement at all major ITTF events in 2019,” stated ITTF CEO Steve Dainton. “We are even considering that the player can challenge any decision during the match, including the legality of the opponent’s service.”

So right now we will continue to ask each other if it was in and out, but technology will soon solve the issue once and for all!

Challenging serves would be extremely interesting. Might slow down matches a little but it will also allow ref's to actually look at the serve again and possibly lead to rule changes.

I wonder what technology will be used. Video (like Hawk-Eye in tennis) or infrared (like Hotspot in Cricket)?

... or commission a study, followed by a proposal to test in a small TT country (Kiribati, anyone), followed by the actual test, followed by a report, followed by a proposal to the BOD or AGM, followed by a vote, then in the fullness of time it gets put in place for the tournaments directly under the auspices of the ITTF - World Championships, World Cup, Olympic Games, Pro Tour. It then filters down lower in inverse proportion to the cost of the solution.

The likes of you and I continue to argue the toss (1), er, whether it hit or missed, until the cows (2) come home.

(1) Other topics of argument available, eg serves, choing, ... I could go on.
(2) Other animals available.

Aside from the cameras, you could also install microphones in the table. That's one advantage table tennis has over other ball sports.

good point - you mostly hear the edge ball, don't see it.

If it hit the player closest to it should have heard it. The video replay doesn't make it look like it deviates, but a tiny fine snick may not be apparent to the view. Certainly contentious. I reckon they should have played a let, cos there's no way the umpire could have been certain looking at the slow-mo replay.

Advice to umpires

-- If in doubt of edge ball, replay the point in question.

Sound plus hotspot would work. Or we could acknowledge that it is really very rare that there is any doubt, not like in cricket, where LBW and caught out decisions are disputed all the time.
