This is OUTRAGEOUSLY illegal.

I mean the guy is a veteran and this stuff still goes on. It's also at a huge Chinese amateur vs. pro grandprix.

Btw Dima and Joaio Monterio lost.

As long as he turns into the ball as he hits it, its fine as its in view of the opponent when contact is made. I do however find the inconsistency in service rules a PITA as its never really enforced at any level consistently... kinda makes the rule a little pointless.

[half jokes]

sadly not illegal, cause,

the ball and blade contact point is judged from referee standpoint,

which beside the table. :P

The ball is supposed to be visible at all times, not just at the moment of contact.

From the ITTF Handbook: https://www.ittf.com/?media-alias=2018_ITTF_Handbook
Quote:
2.6.1 Service shall start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's
stationary free hand.
2.6.4 From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of
the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden
from the receiver by the server or his or her doubles partner or by anything
they wear or carry.

I still think that the service rule is pretty pointless even as it's written, which admittedly I was out of date with the written rule. It is never really enforced and I only ever see an issue with serves at the amateur level with people having problems receiving a players serve then with an other player as umpire it turns into a mess as an argument ensues.

Then, at higher levels its so infrequently called on illegal balls that the rule is just a pointless, rarely enforced law of the game. So I don't see what the point of it is personally when a) Its hardly enforced at elite levels and b) It causes arguments at amateur level tournaments. B is probably caused a little by A as players try to emulate the elite players serves.

If this rule was enforced and actually made a valid point while in all levels of play and not what it is now, a seemingly subjective, if you want to rule. Then yeah its a good rule, but its so inconsistently called and unenforced that currently its just a waste of words in a document.
