ITTF T9 Racket Control, manual for umpire, suggests that the treated pimps can be detected just by visual inspection using a 8x optical loupe.

And yes, the loupe can be of great help when pimps treated with epoxy or superglue.

Still, I never heared they actually did such inspection in ITTF Events before.

Umpires have now got an explicit Guidance from ITTF. The guidance is goes as follows
-- IT is a player's responsibility to keep up his rubber in proper condition. Player may not use pimples that does not comply with the friction limit, that is far lower friction than the standard COF= 0.5 (unduly slick pimples).

An Italian engineer and tt-goods manufacturer Mr. Covini has now offered a low-cost, portable device to implement the ITTF guidance in every event, both internationally and domestically.
Mr. Covini is now trying to win an ITTF recognition as an "approved testing device."

The ITTF is ruining table tennis.

really pathetic, people layer tenergy with various coats of boosters and they get away with it. Frictionless pimples should never have been banned, they are less deceptive, predictable for good players, and most of all are much harder to play with!

That horse has already bolted.
Too much friction with boosters and not enough friction with pimples.
They deserve a not so hidden serve over the service rule.
As for the balls up over plastic balls ...

Looks like an unscientific amateur gadget.

I am sorry for being grumpy, but,

There one wrong design in that device,

assuming the bat is flat, only inclination matter, so, simple calculation could find the angle where friction is 0.5 (that would be 45 deg). That means,

at 45 degree angle, and assuming the weight start from stand still,

If pips friction more than 0.5, the weight would not slide, but,

if the friction less than 0.5, the weight would slide all the way down.

that means,

the marker would be useless, cause the device could detect that the pips friction more than 0.5, but not to measure exact friction.

I do say that the device is really elegant and should be available at low price, but,

I want the minimum friction rule is abolished anyway. [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY][FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND TIGHTLY-CLOSED EYES]

Not necessarily. I didn't understand what he was saying, but the label on the slide indicates you do a 15 second timed measurement. So you could guesstimate friction based on time.

Although really, ignoring the pips flexing, if it's already moving and broken the static coefficent, it's probably over the friction limit.

The friction will vary depending on the weight, as more weight will bend the pips. I don't think the ITTF has defined the pressure (i.e. weight) at which the friction is measured.

Superglue. Thanks for the idea. Easy to do, too...

I seem to recall, not long after the ban, people were doing superglue dipping plates where you roll your lp across it to just coat the tops.

Actually, BEFORE the ban, the manufacturers (i.e. Neubauer et al.) were doing the exact same thing, except I heard it was done with epoxy. This was how you make frictionless rubber in the first place. You can still buy the some of the exact same rubbers today from Eacheng, except that, without the epoxy treatment, they just behave like regular long pips.

Today, superglue is dirt cheap. Back in the 1990s it wasn't. I think it'd have much more of an effect than some of the other things people talk about doing - UV lamps and whatnot. It IS a great deal more obvious, of course... the ends of the pips would probably turn white..

Come to think of it.. you can buy UV-activated resins these days, quite cheaply and available via AliExpress. It'd be easy to use.. no mixing necessary, probably a lot less in the way of noxious odors, no worries about getting your fingertips glued to the rubber by mistake... and you get to use that UV lamp you bought after all...
