PRW do you have a USTTA rating? It would be interesting to compare Australian/RC and US ratings.

Hi carbonman,

I posted this in another thread..
"my Ratings Central is 1566±33; my US rating is 1850. Using NY as a benchmark is possibly a bit suspect - I am playing with Achilles tendonitis at the moment, and it was the worst there - I almost pulled out. I am also about 25 lbs heavier than when I was in Oz. I recently beat Der Echte (1966 US) 3-1 at a tournament, for those who know Der Echte.

In terms of playing here: according to my coach, am a solid 2000 level player, with the potential to get to around 2100 if I get rid of some basic errors. I would say my game now is equivalent to when I was playing in Oz; so, my best guess as to the differential is 2000-1550, = 450?"

as well as this....

"interesting update to this:
Khoa Nguyen recently played in the Australia veterans championships. He ended up with a Ratings Central rating of 2035, after playing +- 35 matches.
His USATT rating is 2511.
Therefore, the difference in this case is 476 - with a top player, with numerous matches under his belt.
My previous guesstimate of 450 difference may be quite accurate!"

so.... that's what I think!

Thx PRW. When I saw you in 2012 I would have thought you were closer to 2100 (of course with a 2700 FH topspin :D ) but I could be wrong. You certainly appeared stronger than a number of US2000 players I have seen but I understand there is considerable fluctuation in the US depending on where u live.

thanks carbonman - there are a number of different factors which make it very difficult to judge. I am not sure of the effect of extra weight and time, but it can't be good :D
I used to play a slightly more conservative game, but am being trained to open up immediately where I can (I used to push a lot long off the backhand, with very heavy spin, off long serves). Now, I will open up asap, but this is still a work in progress.

Probably the biggest factor of all: here, the majority of players I play are trained juniors, who will flick to my bh, and then engage in hyperspeed bh to bh topspin until I miss through exhaustion, or they finish with a smash. Many train 3 or more times per week.. In Australia, most opponents were veterans, where I could often open up first. I came very close 2 weeks ago to beating a 2200+ player with lp bh, sp fh - my ideal is a veteran defender with lp on his bh, who doesn't twiddle!

Barney (my coach, who is one of the 2400 players in the video above) semi-jokingly says I have a 2400 fh attack, and a 1600 defense - so I am being trained mostly at blocking atm. Also, not running around the bh side, but opening with a bh loop.

I think I remember, I was there in the Sterling location in Sep 2015.

You remember me? Wow. I was staying in the Hyatt hotel right by the old Sterling location of Smash TTC, and was there for only one session that trip.

Did you perhaps play in the nice doubles game we had right at the end of that session?
