I'm thinking of picking up a BTY Senkoh-1 and getting some Sriver rubber to go with it, as many people have recommended Sriver with cypress blades. My question is, in choosing between 1.5, 1.7, 1.9, and 2.1 mm sponge thickness, what would be the best option for a 9mm cypress blade?

For Sriver and all-rounder rubber in general,

You can read the thickness (1.5 mm, 1.7 mm) and (1.9 mm, and 2.1 mm) as (Block and Drive) and (Chop and Loop), or (I hit the ball) and (I spin the ball)

If You are looping all the ball, as thick as possible. Loop with an occasional drive or chop better use 1.9 mm.

Japanese Penhold (especially 1 ply Cypress bats like the Senkoh-1) is primarily for topspin attack. So get max sponge. If this were 1990 I'd tell you to get 2.0mm, but this is 2018 and we're playing with a 40mm plastic ball, not a 38mm celluloid one. Level doesn't matter, even if you're a rank beginner you will be hoping to learn the proper strokes rather than just poking at the ball.
