Kinda of going off topic because of the enlarged dawei sheets posted...

Someone needs to explain to me how enlarging the LPs is beneficial. If you enlarge them, seems to me they'd be like MPs or even SPs with more grip, because larger pips mean larger surface area to rub on the ball. Unless the surface grip is reduced by the soaking process...which I don't think it would.

Just seems like it would render the sheets inconsistent from one to another, and it's a lot of effort for something that won't make you more dangerous in any way.

Beat me, but that old guy plays with it... and does very well with it, you see what it does to people... Also remember the pips get LONGER, maybe even softer.

I suppose if you want to try making some yourself it would be cheaper to use pomace olive oil rather than Extra Virgin - then again who knows if Extra Virgin is the only sort that works?

I’ve tried the enlarged Dawei pips and didn’t like it at the time...very fast and uncontrollable. But in those days I was mostly a passive blocker. I’m currently using the regular Dawei 388D-1 rubber and actively working the rubber like JJ Huang does, and it’s turning out pretty well.

Note: I measured my blade. A 180 x 165 sheet would barely cover it.

Note 2: I love Japsican's "Thin Inverted Chopping Rubbers Grid" since I prefer thin sponges. Just wish it had sheet sizes.

Agree with MNNB. Tried the BIG Dawei 388d1 sheet and pips a while back. Got it from TTNPP. Never found anything special about it. It was very bouncy with lack of control. Disappointing! So into the bin it went

WHERE IS THE TEXTILES?

Pips with textile underlayer is it.
Few people ever tasted the goody, nice thing indeed.
This textile layer would make you some Lord of Blocking Play, indeed.
Again, the textiles would make it very easy to glue the rubber sheet onto the blade.

I really cant get the reason why they dropped producing pimpled rubbers with textiles underneath. So pity.

The old Leyland had the cloth backing. Made it VERY EASY to handle. Didn't appreciate it at the time, since I hadn't tried gluing on unbacked OX sheets before. I believe the Butterfly hard bat rubber (what's it called - Orthodox?) and the TSP and/or Yasaka offerings also have cloth on the back, so they might resemble Leyland in playing properties as well. I suppose you COULD glue a layer of cloth (probably best to use a heavy linen.. maybe a piece of old bedsheet) and then glue the OX sheet on top of that.. though one wonders if it would be legal to do this.

Previously when I bought Dawei 388D-1 from Eacheng, it came in these clear packages and the sheet was quite large. Today I received an order of five new sheets and now they come with an enclosed card and are cut much smaller, too small to fit my blade.

I still have a few sheets of the old size/style of Dawei 388D. Guess I'll have to switch to that when the time comes. It's always something with this sport.

That's annoying! They probably make the rubber in multiple factories... each does it's own thing.

igorponger: Regarding textile enforced rubber, I'm pretty sure they still make those... I recently glued a Phantom 007 which has the textile reinforcement. Who said they're discontinued?
