Hi All,

A team mate of mine currently plays with Tibhar Ellen anti spin on his BH and is considering trialling pips for the first time as he has been told the style of play for both is similar, but he doesn't know which best to use. Here is some background....

He's an older chap (I am sure he won't mind me saying this  ) and due to this doesn't move around too much. He can cover the baseline quite well within the width of the table itself, but he doesn't chase angles or move in and out too much.

He has played for a lot of years and has developed in recent years (last 10 I believe) to control the play by moving the ball around the opponents side and is pretty good at this tactic. He likes to "dead" the ball (as he puts it) with his anti spin and likes to flat hit with it too.

I would doubt he is going to be too bothered about being able to impart a lot of his own spin or is going to want something that he has to re-learn too much moving from anti, so is that even possible ?

I hope you can help me to explain a few things to him ? :)

Long or short pips and what are the short and simple pro's and con's of each
Blade - He currently uses a blade in the off- or All+ category and generates enough speed from this, but moving to pips should he also consider moving to a DEF blade or maybe even a flat hitting non flexible carbon ? again pro's and con's for this ?

Any other advice relating to PIPS or blade category for his style is welcomed.
Any questions about his play I will try to answer if I haven't given enough info.

Many thanks all for your advice/guidance.

That's a great post thank you.

So long pips is talked about, but what about medium or short?

As pips seem to be a defensive style, would a defensive blade be preferable or would that reduce too much speed when using the inverted on the fh? Would he be better to stay with an all-round blade?

Many thanks

A defensive or all around blade will work good.

A good inexpensive blade for long pips is XVT balsa Hinoki carbon, works good for bh long pips and inverted offensive 4h side.

Would the XVT you mention be in the OFF or OFF- range ?

Blade wise he was looking at the Yinhe T11 (off-), 5+2, Balsa core with Limba outer or the Yinhe Y-3 (All+) or the Yinhe 980 xx (20th anniversary ed.) which is a defensive blade?

If he has spent many years playing and perfecting the use of anti then probably best to stay with anti and if necessary try different blade and rubber combinations.

Only try pips which could be long, medium or short if he is finding the Anti no longer working for him, but then again a change of anti and /or blade may work fine.

Perhaps some players with experience of both anti and pips would be able to suggest which type of pip out rubber would be an easy transition from the Tibhar anti he is currently using.

If he’s switching from anti and is primarily a close to the table defender then long pimple in OX or very thin sponge would be the closest equivalent, particularly the slower more spin insensitive ones. In general, shorter pimples offer less disruption and reversal but more offensive potential.

He should be aware that it’s not a simple transition that can be done without plenty of practice. The last anti I used was Tibhar Ellen Def before switching to LP over a year ago and I still have to force myself to adjust my strokes. He will find LP less secure, especially initially. Anti is safer to play with but I find LP offers more variety and disruptive potential.

He is definitely a close to the table defender and occasionally tries to forehand drive, but I think having anti on his fh too is messing him up.

@chas
He has played a lot of years with anti (at least the 6 years I have known him), but perfecting is not the word I would use ;)
Effective maybe, but as soon as you figure out what the anti is doing his advantage is gone.

So i think the way to go is for him to try long pips ox, now just to figure out which of the 3 Yinhe blades he has been looking at might be his best option?

Slightly off topic, but anyone got a fool proof way of gluing ox pips?

The XVT plays defensive when using long pips on the bh, plays offensive when using inverted on the 4h. The inverted rubber used needs have hard sponge for best consistency on that blade. The XVT Balsa Carbon is better than those other blades when using long pips.
