How time flies, another 4 years have passed.
It's now down to 16 teams in this World Cup in Russia.
It's a very different World Cup this time. The Italian team and the Dutch team did not qualify. Now, Germany is eliminated in the first round, first time ever in 80 years.
Any comments, predictions? Favourite team?
My favourite teams over the years have been Argentina and Holland. I guess I can only cheer for one team this time. Predictions...very difficult for this time. Maybe we'll see a first time champion team?

Down to 8 teams now!

My prediction for winner would be Brazil, 2nd would be France.

Very surprised the Portugese are out. They looked so impressive on the field but they couldn't get past the Russian defence.

They can meet in the semi-final, but not the final.
Very likely, it will be a South American team vs European team final. I would like to see a South American team win this time. Europe won 11 Cups; S America won 9.
(Oh, want to see a classic Brazil vs France match, watch on youtube the 1986 World Cup quarter-final match! )

Both Uruguay and Brazil are eliminated.
My prediction is wrong. There won't be a South American team vs European team final.

I couldn't be happier at the prospect of an all-European semis and final!

It looks like another late, late night for me. Afternoon matches in Russia start at midnight here, and the evening match at 4am. But the games have been of such an extraordinary standard it's worth the effort.

Actually, come to think of it, what we need is a flat earth so that the sun would be shining on everyone at the same time!

Same here. The guy who organizes Weekend Social Doubles went to Russia to watch. So no doubles this weekend.

England 2-0 by the way... Russia match at 2am local time, so I am NOT going to go watch it..

My money is on Croatia tonight. France did look solid as hell against Belgium last night so they'll probably win the whole thing no matter who advances tonight though.

The two semifinals air at 2am so I am giving them a miss. The 3rd place and finals are earlier so I might go watch those. The cineplex near where I live is showing the games on a humongous screen in the lobby for free so I will probably go there.

Watched the finals. Wow, that was a good game. I was expecting France to win but with this World Cup you just didn't know how it was going to turn out until it did.
