I know some people like heavy table tennis blades. What are some of the heaviest you've seen?

Heavy blades that come to mind are:

Joo Sea Hyuk

Yeah, these are meant for use with one very light rubber sheet (long pips). I suppose the idea is the finished bat will weigh more or less what a lighter blade would weigh with two sheets of inverted.

Those 1970s cheap Chinese basswood blades also tend to be terribly heavy. And those were NOT meant to be used with long pips, so the finished bats were REALLY heavy.

My JSH is the heaviest blade I have, but used with Sword Scylla Ox on one side, the complete bat is less heavy than anything other than my Balsa-Carbon, which also has Ox on one side. My heaviest playing bat was a Yinhe V-14 Pro (95g blade) with Tenergy 05 and OVE, which came in at 205g. I have since moved to Loki GTX and Nittaku FastArc G-1 on this blade, and the weight is now 192g. which is very comfortable for me.

I'll tell you what I decided long-term about blade weight:

My first custom blade was a T-11+ (balsa/carbon about 70g) followed soon by Clipper (93g) then Mazunov (100g+), which I liked very much because it was rigid, hard, and heavy. At that time I was shakehand using H2 on both sides (!), and the Mazunov helped me punch into that hard sponge.

As I was influenced by the styles and ideas in this forum I eventually sought compromise, and I studied which of these three properties - rigidity, hardness, heaviness - I would be willing to give up. Years later now, after travelling all the way "down" to MPM/VKMD/poplar/willow 5.0-5.4mm, then back "up" to koto or walnut over spruce 5.6-5.85mm, repeatedly trying limba/ayous from AC through Clipper all of that time, the high points were MPM (thin, anigre), YEO (medium thickness, walnut), and Clipper (no hardwood veneer, but more rigid).

Conclusion: The property I was most willing to give up was the weight of the *blade*, but this is moderated by the need for some weight of the loaded paddle: As I have OX on one side, and as I guess that the rubber on the other side was probably designed/calibrated on blades with an inverted rubber on the other side, I'll take the stability of a slightly heavy blade. In other words, if I were playing double inverted it is not the light weight that would stop me from playing with a Septear or AC.

While I'm here, let me tell you that the property I was least willing to give up was surface hardness - anigre, koto, walnut.

But still love Clipper. Tried it a million times.

Ok, better say byebye now.

Got a 100+g DHS 08 penhold. 08 and 032 were famous for being heavy bricks.

Back when those were popular in China, there were a lot of penhold pips out hitters. And they'd use only one sheet of rubber. I can't imagine using one of these with two sheets and RPB. You'd probably sprain your thumb and index finger!

Butterfly Defence Alpha is 95 g
My Custom Super Slow Blade is 120 g in very head light balance (1 cm above handle with rubbers on), which make it feel super light.

One wonders what bare blades weighed back in the days of Hardbat. Anyone weigh a MacCrossen? The complete racket shouldn't weight very much more than a bare blade.

Below some photos of a Vintage Stiga Kjell Johansson blade manufactured in 1971.

Thickness: 5,65 mm / Head Size: 163 x 153 mm / Weight: 106 g

I got it from an old man (once a member of the German National Team) who got it over 50 years ago from Hans Alsér personally.
During his time working as the German National Chief Coach (1971- 1974) Alsér provided some of the best German players with special selections of extra fast and extra heavy 5-ply Limba/Abachi Stiga Blades, like this one:

It is unplayed, still in brandnew condition. (Just a little part of the coloured sticker on the grip is missing.)

I'm not selling it, I keep it as a gift, connected to old memories.

I once also got a second one from the same source - and that was even heavier: 108 g. I sold it years ago to a German high class player who was able to handle it. (Together with thick & hard rubbers on both sides his bat weighted approximately 210 g.)

Before I gave him that 108 g beast, he played with an old Stiga Clipper Wood from the very first generation (manufactured 1981). He switched immediately from his 7-ply Clipper to the older 5-ply wood, because - according to his judgement - the heavy Vintage-Johansson had similar top-speed but superior control and a more lively touch.

He played 5 years with it, until his paddle had been stolen at a tournament. Switching back to his old Clipper Wood was impossible for him after five years with those - in his eyes - superior Johansson blade. So he tried other heavy & fast 5-ply Blades, and settled finally for a Butterfly Cresail (first) and Mazunov (second), both in the 105 g range, too.

But, as he told me repeatedly, if he would still have free choice, he would switch back promptly to that old heavy stolen Johansson blade: the Mazunov & Cresail (both much thicker, far over 6 mm) surpassing it slightly in speed, but are no match in terms of control, flexibility & liveliness.
He also tried non-all-wood blades like Stiga Graphite, Butterfly Tamca Gergely, Oberon, and Viscaria (very first series), but never liked them as much as the all-wood blades....

I've just discovered that the "fine scale" I had been using for the last few months was not correctly adjusted, sometimes displaying 2 to 3 grams too much for weights over 100 grams.
This has now been fixed.

The old Stiga Johansson Blade presented above with 106 grams weighs in fact only 103:



Having declared that it is not for sale (and considering that I need fresh winter tires for my old Benz badly), well.... I might think this position over in case that 'a very special offer' would come in....

106g!!! Back when men were men, perhaps?

Below another old Stiga Johansson Wood, I got it some weeks ago from a friend in Norway:




This one is probably not as fast as the 103 g-Johansson blade above.
It is slightly lighter, slightly older, and slightly larger: 99 g - manufactured presumably 1969 ; head size: 163 x 155 mm; thickness: 5,7 mm

With not too heavy rubbers, I might be able to handle it - gonna playtest next week:
putting a thinner Globe 999 E in 1,5 mm on the backhand; on the forehand a traditional Hurricane II (no Neo) in 2,2 with medium hardness (39° or 40°).

So the weight in total hopefully will not exceed my critical 195 g-limit
