Victas Koji Matsushita Offensive.
Easy to recognize the darker mahogany top layers.

I own this blade and the VKMO is the only Victas blade with darker outer plies.
Also, most Chinese national team choppers use either the VKMO or the JSH (Ma Te, Hu Limei, etc....).
Not sure what SP Wu Yang is using but the white sponge doesn't look like Spectol.

I always watch Wu Yang's games because her style is so interesting.
Her defensive spin and placement and then sudden attack makes
table tennis seem like chess. The introduction of the new plastic ball
has given the all out attacker an advantage so we now have to watch
more one dimentional blasting the ball backwards and forwards than
ever.

Wu Yang's and other defenders game has now become much more
of an uphill battle. The Japanese have realised how to beat Wu Yang
and Kasumi Ishikawa was the first to do so using the method of blasting
the ball straight after the bounce knowing there is not enough back
spin produced with the new ball and therefor a bigger margin of error
for the attacker. Ishikawa shocked everyone with this tactic in the
German Open 2017 and then again in 2018. Now every attacker will
do the same when they meet her.

Wu Yang must adjust her shots to be flatter and faster and maybe
change to more deceptive pimples and improve her forearm attack.
Above all she must find a way to reduce the balls bounce when it
lands of the other side of the net as this is the cause of her problems.
Easier said than done. Dare I say it Han Yings style may be the way.

I'm curious as to what you think Han Ying does differently? She plays more passively, for sure, but her win rate against the same players doesn't appear to be any better.

I wonder who the most successful chopper is now... Kim Song I who plays very aggressively with the forehand doesn't seem to beat any of the top players either.

If you look at Suh Hyo Won, she rarely loses to players outside the top 20. It might be that only the highest rated players top 1-15 are capable of exploiting the new ball routinely against choppers. Same with Wu Yang and the others -- so perhaps, it just means that instead of being able to reach top 10 in women's anymore as a chopper... that number has fallen closer to around top 20-30 in world ranking. Just how it is in the men's game, aside from Joo, but now he's retired so we can't even put that asterisk in!

Yes I take your point that all defenders at the moment are struggling against the top attackers and it looks like it will stay that
way until something changes. My concern though is the worlds best female defender Wu Yang and her ability to compete with the best
attackers.

The point I'm making about Wu Yang is that many of her chop returns bounce high and close to the net without heavy backspin and can be
smashed by most good attackers for a winner. If she does manage to get to the ball the follow up return is usually weak and offers
another easy chance to the attacker to smash once again. Enter the vicious circle.

Han Ying suffers from the same problem but in the main keeps the ball lower over the net and seems to be more willing to attack sooner
in the rally when defence seems futile. She also stays close to the table more whereas Wu Yang chooses to step away which means her
return bounces high when it lands and becomes easy pickings.

It seems like the days of the classical defender are over and only the modern defender stands a chance.

I have not seen the attackers game suffer because of the new ball, if the ball is slower as has been said then the attacker has more
time to wind up their swing and hit with more power.

I think if the defender makes a weak return which is attacked then the defender must attack straight away if they can get to the ball.
Why waste energy and become demoralized by keep sending weak returns back in the hope the attacker will make a mistake.

Look at what Mima Ito can do with pimples on her backhand, she just took down the three best female attackers in the world.

So regarding Wu Yang, what can she do to prevent annihilation by Kasumi Ishikawa if and when they next do battle. Surely she cant
play the same way. Any new ideas or does the defensive game just stand still.

But I'd still have to say that all of the choppers losing to the top players. For both men and women!

I dont think wu's higher chops are the real issue, since choppers of different styles also lose.

I think what youd need for a chopper to beat the top is almost impossible. Able to twiddle expertly and attack at least on par with the best attackers, forehand and backhand. So they could not be pinned down to either side. Because right now the attacker can essentially wait out the chopper and pick their smashes. Choppers need to open fire from both sides against all shots.

Then you have to wonder if they're really a chopper or not... but it appears the art of the chop in the top 10 is a dead one currently.top 20 to 30 is still viable, so it's not too bad overall imo, especially for amateurs. Some try to use that as an excuse, though chtetninne is still kicking butt in his leagues as an older, classical chopper!

I agree totally, but a dead style now can be a winning one in the future. Just look at Ito Mima!

So upsetting to see Wu Yang stumble and fall badly today, looks a very similar ankle injury as Ding Ning's a few years back.
Get well soon Wu Yang.
