Which of these 3 aspects of serving wins you most posts in your game. By wins most points, I don't mean your opponent fails to return your serve, I mean you win the point on your serve.

To make this question more focused, you can vote for only one option.

Spin (underspin) for the majority, side/no spin for disguise every now and then.

For serves it is spin, for rally strokes placement.

Spin serves ftw.

Loop kills with placement for rallies.

The one shot which wins me immediate results? A backhand, light side-spin serve, short to the forehand. I usually serve a backhand, backspin, then next serve follow with the light, side-spin and watch them push too long and wide.

I'm surprised you didn't offer more choices. Power? We have one guy at the club who just blasts the ball for winners. How about boredom? I actually win most points when my opponent falls asleep playing me.

Penhold player here. I can do extremely spinny serves, but I am also great at placement and disguise. I rely on the last two more than just pure spin. The only time I really rely on pure spin is on underspin serves, otherwise I am always looking for deception, be it through disguise or placement.

Same for strokes, placement is key and then spinny loops, with some sidespin added to them. I think for strokes, power is always an option you can add.

For me, it's placement. When I was still learning and playing the mid-lower grade players, i'd win with spin deception. As a beginner it was speed. I find i need a combination but as for winning points, I force far more errors (regardless of amount of spin or pace) if I can place the ball in an awkward spot.

I can also follow up with a winner that's well placed with a weak return too. doesn't really matter how hard I hit it, some of these kids are just too darn quick...

Edit: Oops only read the title of the thread not the survey.

Spin only works up to a certain level. Beyond that it requires disguise.

Placement always helps, though. I was playing one guy last night who had a pretty dominant forehand. We got into a few rallies where he would edge over towards his backhand, making the area I had to aim for to keep it on his backhand smaller and smaller. Meanwhile, of course, he was opening himself up for me to play to his very wide forehand. Both situations (playing to an increasingly smaller backhand area and playing a wide enough forehand that wouldn't get killed or be too wide and go off the table) require reasonable placement skills.

I was referring to the serve itself rather than what you do once a rally has started.

For me, spin wins at lower levels, placement stops me from being annihilated and controls the opponents options - it can force a weak return too, disguise is needed against better players. Ironically, disguise I find less effective against weaker places as they don't read the clues as to what spin is on the ball and so disguising those clues is wasted.

For me, a variation of spin and placement. The spin variation more so than the placement. But in the end, it’s a sort of disguise...

I’m sort of an unorthodox penholder who mainly serves reverse pendulum.

Does disguising the spin count? I win a LOT of points by serving side-top disguised as side-bottom. Probably less so than I used to, but still quite a bit.

Exactly what I mean. I can easily disguise my side too as side bottom and get a ton of juicy pop ups on my forehand side (from reverse spin).

What I mean is - when I disguise the spin, does that count as "spin" or "disguise" when it comes to the poll?

Disguise - if disguise is the determining factor.

None of them, I believe.

I can set up for attack when I am able to surprise my opponent. Variation is the key, with serves as well as during the rally. Long underspin serves, fast no-spin to the hip, extremely short/angled, max speed with topspin when they step aside for a FH-only return, a very high bounce to the BH side every now and then. Etc.

"Speed" (low, high) might come close as my "best tool". Above I called it "surprise", which is a bit like disguise, but I do not make any "fake moves" or utilize any deceptive equipment, so I didn't select it. No vote from me. Sorry!
