What is Wu Yang's fate for the meanwhile? Doesn't seem like any chinese chopper has replaced her, and I haven't seen another in any events at the same skill level.

Yet Wu has experienced the drop off in wins... due to new ball? Do they just not care too much anymore?

Yes, the new ball ( = less spin ) has changed the game for all. Me, now more or less retired from TT - before competing sometimes as high as like the 4th league in Germany - I‘m experimenting now with no pressure to win anymore and switching forth and back between short / long pips on the backhand and changing the wood between Def / Off resp. slow / fast material.

Back then and still now the length of the ball placement is key for a defender and also to avoid extreme angles. As long as you hit the white line at the end of the table the height is almost irrelevant. Actually a relative high ball loaded with decent backspin and near to the end of the table is more difficult to topspin against vs a low ball.

Nevertheless nowadays the ability to start a counter attack is more needed than in the past as the good attackers have learned to read the game better and better. With a slow setup, placement during counter attacks has become even more important as this is attackers area ( nearer to the table ) and they have become more athletic and quite good in passive game with their fast material setup.
