I have been asking at club and tournaments and opinions differ.

I have noticed far more and more frequent edge balls during practice and play.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't believe this unless someone actually kept records over a period of time. In fact, I can't see why it would happen, so I'd be skeptical. It's so easy to fool oneself over something like this.

Ah.. that's the term for what I was thinking of..

For the life of me, I can't figure out why the new ball would end up hitting a edge any more than the old one - the only thing that would do it would be if the ball were somehow attracted to the edges..

I've been wrong before but I've noticed more edges but not willing to play long hours with the old ball to compare since it's not used in tournaments anymore.

Thanks for the opinions!

I have not noticed more edge balls in play. I want to say I have noticed that the edge strikes seem to impart more damage to the larger ball. However this is also confirmation bias in reality, as I only remember replacing the borked ones and not the ones that took and edge strike and are still playable

It is possible due to the change in speed spin and bounce characteristics.

Really? Can you explain how on earth that would happen? As far as I can see, either the ball is heading for the edge or it's not, regardless of whether it's a curved trajectory or not, or bouncier or not. I'd love to see the science.

If fewer balls are going long because of the change in ball deceleration, then more potential for edge balls.

If fewer balls are going long because of the change in ball deceleration, then more potential for edge balls.

Using exactly the same logic:

If 40+ balls are falling shorter "because of the change in ball deceleration", then more potential for what would have been edge balls to now become full bouncing balls.

If celluloid balls fly further because they are not subject to "change in ball deceleration", then more potential for flying long and only catching the edge.

Except we are going from celluloid to plastic which affects the change.

Er… see above.

"If 40+ balls are falling shorter "because of the change in ball deceleration", then more potential for what would have been edge balls to now become full bouncing balls."

It works both ways.. shorter balls can either mean LESS edge hits if they were going to hit the edge with the celluloid ball, OR they can mean MORE edge hits if they were going to land just beyond the table with the celluloid ball.

How long are you guys playing with the 40+ ball?
I already have to play atleast 3 years with it .. when looking over the forum it looks like you just started with them.

I never think about it anymore. We had one transit year where you could play both but that was bad .....
ok I want to play new ball .. but opponent wants to play old ball ..... eeerrrrggghh.

Oops. I didn't qualify my initial post. I have noticed more edge balls in practice and noodling around than in actual match play.

The 40+ ball has been around for a couple of years but most clubs in good old usa are too cheap to buy them until they became standard in league play and tournaments.
