Looking for help deciding a new setup. My game is modern defense, USATT rating 1900+. I typically open with deceptive LP play on the backhand, and/or topspin attack on the forehand. During longer rallies, I will play further back with chops on the backhand and loop/counterloop on the forehand. I occasionally twiddle and flick with the backhand, but I never chop with the forehand. My ~11 year old Peter Korbel blade recently broke :( so I'm looking for a new blade. I've bought from colestt.com for years, and looking at his website, I'm deciding between the galaxy w-6 and lq-1 (or other). For rubbers, I'm pretty set on dawei inspirit quattro ul 2.2mm and 388d-1 0.5mm, but open to suggestions on that front as well. My game emphasizes controlled spinny loops and chops. Thanks!

Jeff

Ask Bogeyhunter, he is prolly the highest rated US based defender on this forum.

He will tell you a number of stuff will work.

For Canada, it is prolly Leatherback.

I don't think the W6 makes a good choppers blade. Good looping yes. Dawei Inspirit will probably work ok for looping on it, but I think there are better rubbers out there these days too. The 388d-1 is a good blocking rubber in Ox, but should work with sponge for chopping. The W6 is pretty cheap, so if you buy one and find its not right, you won't have wasted much. Don't get me wrong, its a good blade, but I think its too flexy for good chopping. The lq-1 I'm not familiar with. What's wrong with another Petr?

I probably will, but the reason I was hesitant is because I didn't start this sport as a chopper. I changed a few years back and was worried that the PK blade and/or my rubber choice was not ideal for my style. Your thoughts?

PK is fine my man....take a look at gionis. You don't want too slow if you intend to play for back with counter loops.

If you twiddle and flick with long pips on the forehand and still intend to chop then i would suggest a 0.5mm Chinese long pip. Then away you go.

Peter Korbel ST handle is hard to find... I will occasionally twiddle and flip with the inverted on my backhand if my opponent has a weak serve.

Are you referring to the inspirit quattro UL? I've used this rubber for years and been happy with it - is it still a viable choice?

For a far away game with blocks and counters for a 1900 player it's perfect! Good choice with the pips too. Keep you going forever.

Great, thanks for the reply. I really can't find the korbel with a straight handle anywhere. Is there a comparable blade that you know of? Or maybe I can sand down a flared handle?

That's definitely worth a try!

The OSP Virtuoso/Virtuoso+ and Tibhar Stratus Power Wood are similar construction to the Petr Korbel and are available with straight handle.
