I know it is unusual but does anyone else play long pips on their forehand. If so, what style ie close to table or away chop defender. I play close to the table and flat hit drive backhand but woud like advice about technique with long pips on forehand particularly with any attacking shots which I like to do so I dont become to predicable for opponent otherwise they seem to pepper my forehand until I make a mistake or pop one up for them to kill.

It's not common but I've played a few players that used forehand long pips. Generally it was for a blocking/hitting style close to the table. From memory, many of them were penhold grip players.

I heard Dr Neubauer has switched to LP forehand and SP backhand a few years back.

I saw a guy recently at a tournament who had LP on FH and anti on BH. He was also a lefty, so I don't think you can imagine more unconventional style :P . He was hitting with LPs quite well, and was 1900+ USATT, IIRC.

anti and dtec ox on a defplay is nice.u can twiddle a lot.
you would need plenty of practice though.dtec f/h will work on chops.
u will need amazing footwork though.

Unfortunately good footwork I have not! Dtechs on my forehand is ok when I push or chop block close to the table but flat hit on incoming underspin balls are so difficult either to long or into the net

I played LP on FH for many years. Now switched to BH bias but twiddle a lot. Difficult to comment without knowing your equipment. What’s your blade and FH LP?

I am just beginning to have setups with LP on BH Ox as I have had for 15 years. I will now switch FH from Moristo SP 2.0 to LP and /or MP with sponge on both my many combination rackets and experiment also with my TSP 8.5 blades that I used Talon OX on for backhand. I saw a guy slap on a sheet of UPUPUP OX on his pen hold blade before a tournament held in my honor in Shanghai in 2019. He finished 4th. I believe the pen hold blade with OX LP’s may be better…

Incredibly tricky player Dickie Fleisher uses TSP p2 on forehand, Rozena 1.7 (I think) on backhand. You can see his technique in this video, it's enough to bother 2300 rated players. I played him once and got crushed.

One thing I know, is most FH LP are PH.

They rely on placements which are wide and deep, and sometimes (although rarely) breaking the tempo suddenly.

I think the point with FH LP is you need to play more risky with the placements and deepness, thus great feel is needed.

The weakness though is if they play too much traditional backhands and their opponent can play placements to their wide FH, in which, maybe RPB would help.

Anyway, this is not a penhold discussion category, so I'll not continue too much.

Excellent topic! I’m a penhold twiddler and have been using LPs for serve receive, hard pushes, and occasional hitting on my FH. I use inverted for serving, RPB, and FH also, with LPs on my FH roughly half the time. Most recently I’ve been using Saviga OX and Qing 0.5 and they’re good, but I’m willing to sacrifice some reversal and funk for more hitting capability.

Another forum member has recommended Piranja, but I’d like to try something cheap before spending $40 on it! :| I was considering either 755 1.0mm, Scylla 0.8mm, or Stranger Attack 0.8mm, all about $10 each on AliExpress. Any suggestions?

have you tried SavigaV with a little sponge? It hits pretty well!

I have considered Saviga 0.5 (and 955 0.7 for that matter) since I liked the OX versions. I suppose I was wanting to try a bit thicker sponge to understand the difference also, since I’ve mostly only played with LPs in OX…maybe a good learning experience, if nothing else? :?: I’ve been eyeing some other attack-oriented German LPs as well, but the cost gives me pause.
